Fuel Filter "issue"

the old filter is is a little shorter by 1/8 inch, maybe a touch less.

which explains why when I remove the grommet the cap screws in fine.



the other thing I just notice is that the old filter did not click into the finger on the cap but actually

set farther into the cap. The new filter clips into the fingers and I loose about an 1/8 because of it.

I had this same problem bought my filter's from Geno's, then when they went to the ""user friendly filters" they were as you say about 1/8" too tall and I couldn't screw the top on, even with my 275 lbs pushing on it all it would do is distort the filter. I finally found a local supplier that got me the old style and haven't had an issue since.

I think I have the same problem, my wife (bless her) drove over to the Napa on the South side of Richmond and picked up a Napagold 3585, it's a slightly different design on top as the Mopar but the exact same length, 1/8" to long #@$%!

Did a quick cross reference against the Mopar 68001914AA for Wix filters and the Wix 33585 looks exactly like my old filter.



I'll do some cross referencing and see what I come up with for other namufactures but at least now I know what the issue is.

the filter part number is 68001914AB, dealer said this replaced the 68001914AA

I wonder what the change is between these filters, I got a Mopar filter only about 3 months ago, was still the "AA" designation not the "AB". Had no trouble installing it. I now have a few Wix filters 33585XE, since I will begin using some Bio soon, I wanted to carry some filters in the truck. I haven't tried installing one yet, hope no problems. Just notice if you use a Wix filter, the 33585 is a 10 micron paper element, the XE on the end designates it as a 7 micron microglass element (FYI).

can you put the filter in the hole first and then screw the cap on? seems and or sounds like the gromete is the wrong size for the hole in the canister, look at photo 2 and you can see its a different diameter, maybe cross referance with the oringinal you pulled out.

I just checked mine. As I changed it last week. First off let's say I have not purchased a Mopar part, so the original part was a CMI part. Fleetguard FS19800E. The book and all said to use the Fleetguard equivalent FS19579E. So I changed that at 3000 miles as the truck had 8 months on the lot. But again, inside was a FS19800E. No biggie so I changed it again at 9000 miles, and installed the FS19800E. Both of these filters are the same diameter and size. The grommet in question is a little tighter in the FS19579E than the FS19800E though.

The Wix number you have is the FS19579E on Fleetguard's site, and the Mopar 68001914AA turns into the FS19800E. Again, looking at two used and new filters, they are both the same size. Maybe the Wix filter is not good.

By the way..... This p/n: 68001914AB is a Fleetguard number FS19856 and is an ULSD compatible version of FS19800(no longer available), which is also the same size of the other two filters.

resolution to the problem

Well I decided to post the solution to my problem in hopes that it could save another Diesel newbie some pain (even though it’s embarrassing)



SO when looking at the inside of the cap I saw a ringed center with a small raised platform in the middle. It looked like this #ad


The top of the NEW Mopar filter is thin and flat and fit very nicely into the fingers and rested freely on top of this…. As shown in this pic #ad




Now when I removed my old filter it did not come out with the cap but I didn’t think anything of it here’s what the top of my old filter looked like #ad




Well yesterday afternoon I had my DUH moment when I looked closely at the NAPA filter and realized that the old filter and it’s top had separated when opened it and that even though the Mopar filter fit I was installing it on top of the old top which was taking up the extra space I needed to screw the top back on.



Anyway I appreciate all of the assistance with this.
