I just bought a 2004. 5 truck. I need to change out the factory fuel filter and the lift pump(which is at the filter bowl housing).

On my '99 I have pre/post pressure taps on top of the filter bowl to purge air out and fill the new filter/bowl with fuel before I start it up using the lift pump. Works great.

What will be the procedure for this truck? Right now I will just do the factory Cummins fuel filter and get a spare Geno' lift pump ordered. I know I need to get a 2 micron filter setup going(when I decide on which way to go), but for now I will do the factory maintenance routine. This truck has 91,000 on the odometer and no apparent problems. No mods on it or LP pressure guage. Is there a way to tap in somewhere so I can install a fuel pressure guage to keep an eye on the factory pump pressure? If so where and what type of pressure should I be seeing?

Thanks guys!!

For right now look at the Baldwin PF7977 for a stock fuel filter replacement. My early '04 is self priming. Your '04. 5 should be the same. You bump the starter, but don't start the engine, let off, and the pump runs until the fuel bowl is full.

Who sells the Baldwin? Does it offer better filtration than the Cummins(Fleetguard)? I just picked up a Cummins/fleetguard fuel filter, and frankly it looks kinda cheap. Sounds like an easy prime though!

Thanks...

The filter is is the Bladwin or Fleetgaurd.

All the CR trucks are self priming as long as the LP will cycle. Just turn the key on and off several times until it fills the cannister.

To monitor FP get a tapped banjo bolt from Genos that replaces the one on the CP-3 inlet, or, get a 2 micron filter that goes between the OE filter and CP-3 and tap into the line or add a fitting on the CP-3 side of the base.

Once again awesome information! I got the Fleetguard filter in for now, did the purge with the pump and it started right up and runs fine. I've got some reading to do on a pump/filter upgrade. Right now I'm leaning toward a Walbro 2 micron system over a Fass... seems I read about a lot of problems with the Fass and its down right expensive!
