Greetings All!

Simple question. It's time for my first fuel filter change. I planned to take it to Dodge to have it changed, so I could learn how to do it myself. Called and got an appointment for tomorrow morning. Anyway I asked the service man how much parts and labor were for this change. He said filter is $44 and labor around $10.

I noticed in the Geno's catelog that I got with the latest TDR mag, a Fleetgard fuel filter was around $15.

Did I miss something here? How can Dodge charge three times more?

Is Fleetgard a good filter? What about other brands?

I'm calling to postpone my appointment until I get some answers.

Thanks in advance

Eric

The Fleetguard filter is the same one that Dodge uses.

I cost just over $16 for a fuel filter at my local Cummins dealer.

I've never considered any brands other than Fleetguard since they are owned by Cummins.

You can do it yourself and save some money. On the 2000 it is easy. I think they are easier than my sons 99 and the 98& 95 I had. Fleetguard makes the fuel filter for Dodge. They just put there name on it and charge you double. Do a search on it and you will find out how simple it is. If you can't find it you will get some replys on this.

Hiya Eric, I have a 99 2500 and the filter is easy to change. Don't know about the 2000s though. Take a look at it and see. I use only Fleetgaurd from Cummins and there only $16. 00. Theres 2 rubber O rings that come with the filter, make sure you put them on, just look at the one you take out and you can see where they go. They say to cycle the lift pump a few times to prime the filter but I fill mine with clean fuel before putting it on and it starts right up every time. Hope this helps ya. If I lived a 100 miles closer I'd come out and do it for ya for 54 bucks, hehe. Happy Rammin! Lou

Genos has the fuel filter FS 1268 for 14. 95
The 2000 model only has one o-ring. We change ours every 10000 miles.

Just went over to a brand new Dodge dealer here in Wilsonville Or. so I could pick up an extra fuel filter for our Reno trip and they quoted me $56. 95 over the counter. I think I better find time to make the 50 mile drive down to Cummins. I normally buy a Baldwin which is a Racor brand for $19 delivered to the house.
The Baldwin distributor here told me that the only company making the fuel filters for the 98. 5 up Dodge/Cummins is Racor so the only difference would be mark-up pricing. Maybe Dodge is buying them from a distributor who buys them from from a warehouse who buys them Cummins who buys them from Racor #ad

I just talked to Racor, they no longer make the fuel filters for the Cummins, as of late last year. He said it went back to Fleetguard. So I don't know about getting "Baldwin" filters. The local truck shop where I get my Fleetguard oil filters couldn't find a fuel filter for my 2001, I'm not sure why. He may have been looking under Baldwin since they carry that brand.
Speaking of oil filters, they have Baldwin (Racor?) for the Cummins but they're really inexpensive which makes me question their quality--only $3. 50 each, the shop says they're good, but that's a little too inexpensive for me!

Eric, order your filter from Geno's, get 2, you should always have a spare in the truck just in case. Or get it at Cummins, if there's one near you.
It's easy to do yourself, I was worried about doing my own, but shouldn't have been. I have a 2001, so I use the Fleetguard 1268. My filter was easy enough to change that I put my plans for a PrimeLoc on hold... .
You'll need a 1/2 inch drive socket 6 point, size 1 1/8 to fit over the "nut" of the filter cover. Also a small can of diesel(one gallon plastic, lawnmower style) and a funnel to refill the filter housing after you get the new filter in. Heavy duty vinyl gloves, disposable, are a good idea too, no need to expose your hands to the benzene in the fuel...
If you're still not sure, email me, I'll give you my home phone, you can call me, I'll take you through it step by step. I hate to see you give the dealership a profit like that.

This signature short enough for you?

Vaughn, Good info on Racor passing off to Fleetguard (maybe a price reduction in the future). As for the Oil filters (Baldwin bt339??,) I'm paying around $6 each so your shop either has the wrong number or is passing along a volume discount. IMO - Price has nothing to do with quality sometimes but not all the time.

BV, sorry, I spit out the wrong price, I double checked and the BT339 filter is $4. 52 each at the truck shop I get stuff at here in Pasco. With tax it's $4. 88. I thought about doing a little research on Baldwin filters but haven't gotten around to it. If they're as good as the Fleetguards I'd rather get the Baldwins for half the cost.

BACK TO FUEL FILTERS - -what is the FLEETRGUARD part number for the '00-'01 Rams?? Thanks!

Vaughn MacKenzie, The Fleetgaurd part number for the fuel filter on 2000 and 2001 is FS1268.

Thanks guys for all your input and valuable experience.

Briar, good suggestion to carry a spare. Has anybody ever developed a list of all the spare parts we should carry in a diesel "first aid kit"?

A tech. at my dealer told me that at cummins school they told him not to fill the filter with fuel from a container, to fill only with the fuel pump. That is the easiest way to get contaminated fuel, and ruin the pump. Never heard it mentioned here, so thought I would add it.
