Fuel Filter replacement

How do I replace the fuel filter on a 2005 5. 9

Very easy. Remove the cap, pull the filter, clean the inside of the canister with a clean lint free rag, install the new filter in the canister, put the cap back on. Then you bump the starter a few times to fill the filter before you start the engine. Just make sure the canister is squeaky clean before you drop the new filter in.



You can also prefill the new filter before you install it. I prefer bumping the starter.

Doesn't the filter snap into the lid? I forgot now with the FASS. One thing I do remember doing is draining the fuel from the filter housing before pulling the filter. Lot less fuel mess!

Otherwise she'll stutter and stumble because of air in the line

Mine never has. I cycle the key until the pump stops running once, maybe twice for good measure, and fire it off.

To run the lift pump. Depending on the engine and ambient temps the lift pump may only run for ~3 seconds when you turn the key on. Bumping the starter signals it to run for ~30 seconds.

Same here, just turn key to run and give it 30 seconds or so, fires right up. Last time I changed it I did that, removed the cap and the filter canister was full.

Bumping once has always worked for me too.

You'll need a 1 - 1/8" socket to get that canister lid off and on... just saying...

1st - engine off

2nd - release fuel filter cannister pressure by rotating yellow lever clockwise 1/4 turn

3rd - cannister cap unscrews and when free-spinning, hand-pulled upward to extract filter

4th - remove old cannister-cap O-ring and replace

5th - un-snap old filter from cannister cap and replace

6th - reinsert cannister cap-o-ring-filter assembly into cannister

7th- hand tighten cap, then use wrench/socket ( 1 1/8 " ) for a three-quarter final turn

8th - close yellow lever counterclockwise 1/4 turn

before attempting to start engine, re-pressurize the filter cannister with fuel. see other posts about 'bumping'.



make sure not to abuse the new o-ring, and that the old one is intact. Don't crossthread the cannister cap.
