From what I can tell, the 2010 and later engines have access to change the fuel filter from above - a cap is removed and the filter can be plucked out. Filters on earlier 6. 7's are a bit of a bear to change in my opinion. You have to get at them from the side and underneath. So I wondered if the earlier engines could be retrofitted with the necessary parts (mounting, filter holder, tubing, fittings, water sensor wiring etc) from a later model to improve the situation. It might be too expensive, and maybe there isn't space in the earlier engines, I just don't know. Someone with knowledge of both engines may know.

Geno's Garage sells the kit to accomplish this exact thing. The kit will convert your '08 to the OEM '09 filter.

My '08 had the inconvenient filter set up. After I learned of the improved filter on '09s and up I bought a kit from Genos.

Newt,

Sorry. I can't find it either. Unless my memory has failed me I bought the one on my truck from Geno's probably four years ago. Perhaps they don't carry it any longer?

Try calling Geno's and asking. They can probably clear up the issue and if they no longer offer it for sale can probably tell you how to obtain one from MOPAR parts.

Actually I'm looking to convert my 09 set up to what I think the 10's and later use. I know that very early models had the throw away cannister type filter which was superseded by a replaceable element type filter. However I'm looking for something to convert the "replace element from below" to the "replace element from above" style. I also looked at Geno's with no luck.

Call Genos and tell them what you are trying to do... IIRC, it is not a "kit" you are looking for, but simply the newer type cannister that accepts the newer type, filter but still fits the oem filter head.

I watched the video. That fuel filter is the same one my '08 has now.

Guess my memory was incorrect about the replaceable filter element being standard on the '09. Apparently it was the '10s that have the improved fllter assembly.

Filter appears to be the same as the one used in my '09 however, the housing has definitely peaked my interest.

Maybe mwilson will chime in with a parts list for a conversion :)

I just called Geno's and spoke with Wendy. I asked her to look back at my purchase history and tell me what kit I bought from them several years ago. She promised to have one of the tech guys call me or email me with the information. She says she thinks they still sell it.

I will post it here when received.

There are no retrofits for the 3rd Gen 6. 7 with the 4th Gen fuel filter housing setup. The only changes for the 3rd Gen are improved filter and no more throw away cannisters. Originally you would throw away the cannister/filter and replace. With the introduction of the newer filter the new cannister that accompanied it was reusable and just the filter was discarded for new.

I'll need a VIN from an '09 and a newer truck. I will get sample VIN's off the net tomorrow and see what else is different other than the filter housing itself.

Will be interesting. Would make a nice upgrade is cost is within reason.

Mike.

Thanks again for the responses, maybe something will come out of this. After Sunday I'm going to be away for 6 weeks or so, with very limited internet access, so I will not be keeping up with the forum.

Mike,

I just spoke with Andy @ Genos again. He confirmed that this part, FS43257, is the correct part to replace the original one piece unit installed on all '07. 5 through '09 Cummins 6. 7 engines.

This part actually two parts will allow owners to replace only the filter element during each fuel filter service.

A close look at the photo on the Geno's website will reveal a tiny red line around the cannister. I overlooked this line last night and again earlier today but I now believe the red line is an o ring seal between cannister body and top cap.

I just got off the phone with Brandon, my favorite parts guy at Geno's. I had left a message w/Brandon earlier.

Brandon confirmed that Geno's Garage part FS43257 is the correct retrofit that I bought from him several years ago.

That is the same as I bought when it became available. Basically, the new "improved" filter would not fit the "old" housing. The "kit" just consisted of the new filter with the housing that fit it.

Thanks. However I already have this set up - it was standard on my 09, and the filter has to be changed from below. The latest models (like the one in the video) is designed so that the filter is taken out of the top of filter holder - much easier. The drain valve is also easier to access.

willym,

Have started on this tonight but can't get the VIN to ESN Cummins reference to work on any 4th gen trucks. If someone has a 4th gen ESN they could spare could you please PM me or e-mail it to me at ...

I'm all set for a third gen 6. 7 as I have Harvey's ESN to work with for that.

It was working before, I used it on 4th gens a couple of times through the winter but Quick Serve has crashed a few times this week so there may still be a few issues. Going to send a trouble notice to Cummins right now and see if there is fix on the way.

I've been trying to find it on QuickServe also, but the best I can do is find a pic of the plumbing to the filter head and not the filter head itself!! #@$%!

My eyes are blurry and my head hurts from looking at all the options listed while using my limited access to the site :{

And remember that there are both front geartrain AND rear geartrain 6. 7 engines produced so that adds to the many options for lines and other hang on stuff.
