One of these days, I will pop the hood on a '13 and snap a pic of the ESN for just this reason!

I want one for my '09, but searching for parts without the ESN is a real pain!! I give kudos to patient parts guys that will eventually find what a customer wants to add to an engine that wasn't offered with 'said part/option' from the factory. :D

willym,

Have started on this tonight but can't get the VIN to ESN Cummins reference to work on any 4th gen trucks. If someone has a 4th gen ESN they could spare could you please PM me or e-mail it to me at ...

I'm all set for a third gen 6. 7 as I have Harvey's ESN to work with for that.

It was working before, I used it on 4th gens a couple of times through the winter but Quick Serve has crashed a few times this week so there may still be a few issues. Going to send a trouble notice to Cummins right now and see if there is fix on the way.

Mike.

Just got a response from Quick Serve and the VIN-ESN reference is working again. They figure it was a weekend glitch so I am all set. I will work on the differences today and see if a conversion is worth attempting from a cost standpoint.

I walked out to the barn after drinking my coffee this am and put a trouble light down under the hood of my truck to see if I could figure out the confusion. Now I think the confusion is in my head.

I bought the new filter assembly several years ago when I read on TDR of a new style on newer trucks. Don't remember who told me or where I read it would fit on my '08 but Brandon at Geno's had the same opinion when I spoke with him recently. When the new filter was received I already had a supply of replacement one piece filters on the shelf so put the new filter assembly on the shelf to install later after using the supply up. I don't think I ever opened the box or examined the parts.

About the same time I'd discovered and bought my old farmhouse out in a rural area and got busy and focused on moving out here and improving a long neglected old house. Once I got settled in enjoying the country my interest in RV travel slowed down. Elections altered many things including diesel fuel prices so my truck usage slowed and basically ended by the end of 2010 when I lost interest in pulling my fifthwheel. The truck has remained parked most of the time and the filter was forgotten.

Abouit a year ago my mechanic friend was going to do a regular scheduled maintenance service on the truck and I gave him the new style filter assembly to install when he did the rest. I don't remember ever talking to him about it again.

When I went out and looked this morning I see a down facing filter mount bracket and a screw in filter threaded on the top. To me it looks like the original one piece filter did when I bought the truck five years ago. I pulled down and looked at some boxes on the shelves and couldn't find the box from Geno's that I remember the new filter being in. I don't know what I've got installed on the truck.

I can't tell if the new style filter cannister containing a filter element is screwed into the original block mounted down facing holder or that's the old style single piece filter I'm looking at. I'll try to reach my mechanic friend this week to ask him but he lives about 80 miles from me now and puts in long hours every day in a field service truck repairing Volvo heavy equipment so I don't annoy him with needless questions.

Ok, I did the filter upgrade that Fleetguard offered in May 2010, after I used up all of my 7um old filters. The new filters for the 6. 7L engine is now offered as a 5um filter with a new housing. The new 5um filter can be changed without throwing away the filter housing as the old 7um filter and housing were. This still screwed into the old fuel filter base and is a Pain in the ___ to change, still uses all of the old wiring harness and fuel heater. The only thing that is different is the replaceable filter and this is now rated as a 5um filter.
I did quit a lot of research around 2010 and came to the conclusion that the new filter housing design that was offered for the 4th gen tucks would not adapt to the third gen trucks with the 6. 7L engine. That is my opinion based on the research I did back in 2010.

Although it sounds like a pain in the rear... . take a look at doing the fuel filter change after removing the driver's side battery... . make sure you isolate the positive lead if you leave the passenger side positive hooked up... . which keeps things powered up like your radio pre-sets.

Jim,

I believe your post is the first completely informed and technically accurate post here in the thread. I believe what you reported is what I saw under my hood this morning. I didn't do the install and was distracted talking to two visiting friends while I thought my friend was doing the work.

I can see why you recommend that. It's hard to see the filter let alone reach in there and change it.
