Guys, thanks for the reply. I moved the handle up and down at first slowly and then rapidly-but nothing happened. I am wondering since the handle is in the up position if as a result something got damaged and hence rendering the manual primer inoperative.

Changed the fuel filter and I thought rather than filling it up with diesel before I installed it, I would spin the filter part way on and then fill it up by using the lever on the lift pump, however, nothing happened. After pouring diesel into the filter and installing it, the truck fired right up and runs without any problem.
I noticed that the manual lever on the lift pump was in the up position, whereas the service manual states that the lever should be in the down position during vehicle operation.
What gives? Is the lift pump going on vacation?

The lever on the mechanical pump is an extension that allows you to work the pump diaphragm, its got a tab on the end but isn't truly connected to the pump arm that rides on the fuel pump's cam lobe. If the cam lobe happens to be in the up position then the diaphragm is already up as far as the lever would push it. Some times I have to bump mine so that the lever will do its job. Also, if you try to work the lever too fast it may not have enough time to pull another shot of fuel up from the tank.
Easiest way still is just to pre-fill the filter first while its off and in your hot little hand.
Hope this helps & good luck, Jones

The lever position I can't comment, but I have had it so it won't pump either and it simply was the cam stopped right at the full out position. Just turned the engine with the alternator pully enough for it to be pumped. FWIW I screw the filter fully on and open the bleeder at the fuel outlet flange on the intake manifold just above the filter on the fuel line to the inj pump. The plug is about 3/8" wrench size, I think, and loosening it allows the air/fuel out until the filter is full.
I will have to run out and check my lever position, I think it was down.

Hi Al;
Normal position for the handle is up. But when you go to use it the handle drops to about 5 o'clock then you need to pump it slow so the diaphram has a chance to operate properly. It should operate between 5 and 6 o'clock postion (It operates in short and slow strokes). As the other guys said, you really need to prefill that filter first or you are going to do alot of pumping! Good luck!

Thanks Peter. I will stick with prefilling the filter, I just thought if the primer worked I would save myself the trouble of having to store some diesel in a container.

Hey Al,
I made up a kinda Rube Goldberg set-up that might be a consideration over storing diesel.
I got a small funnel with about a 1/4" outlet,a short piece of fuel line and a throw-away in-line fuel filter. Hooked the stuff together and now when I do a filter change I pre-fill the new filter with the fuel still in the old filter without worrying about transfering dirt from the unfiltered side. Devilishly clever, eh wot?

Jones, what a nifty idea. That's one of the things I like about the TDR - what an ingenious bunch.

Al,

I've filled mine exactly the way you described the last 2 times I've changed the filter. Have not had any problems and it didn't take very many pumps to get the filter filled up. Maybe I got lucky and had the plunger in the right place both times but I'll keep doing this way unless there are problems.
