Hi, any one here have a repair manual for an '04. 5 Cummins 1-ton dually? I need to know the color code of the wire that goes from the on-board fuel gauge sending unit to the fuel gauge in the dash panel. Also, the color code of the on-board in-tank fuel pump feed would be a help.

I had to have my switch over valve (from on-board tank to aux tank) replaced last week. Afterward, my fuel gauge was stuck at the reading of when the valve was replaced and would not move. So I got underneath to take a look. The wire that was spliced to the supposed dash fuel gauge wire was loose and as soon as I touched it broke apart. Of course, now the dash gauge reads empty! I went and got some connectors and tried to splice it back together, to make a long story short I now have 3 broken wires and still no dash gauge reading. Maybe I got the wrong wires spliced?

Anyway, the tanks seem to be switching ok, even though one of the broken wires looks as though it feeds the on-board fuel pump. I would just like to have some sort of a plan before I get back under there. Have to do it on the lawn and yesterday morning it snowed here. So, it may not be a pleasant undertaking. Would like to have the gauge working before winter!!

Thanks

TLane, thanks for the web link, but I couldn't find what I am looking for. It referred to ckt diagrams but I couldn't find them. Will try again later when I have more time.

Andres, the wire was cut and respliced when my aux tank was put in. It is supposed to work in conjunction with the toggle switch that changes the fuel feed from one tank to the other and then read the amount of fuel that is in that tank. The wire broke off, I thought I spliced it back together but still do not get a reading at the dash. So I am looking for the color of the wire that goes to the dash so I can vereify that I spliced the right ones!?!

Thanks to both for your replies.

TLane, I'm not sure how you found this, but it seems to be what I am looking for. You pretty much need a PHD to read the stuff, but it sure does help. It looks like the DB/WT is the wire I am looking for.

Thanks again

Well, TLane gave me the correct color of the wire I was looking for. In addition, I called the guy that put in my aux tank and he gave me ALL the color codes of the wires he connected. Right off the top of his head! Worked out well because I needed to connect that TLane wire in BOTH directions to 2 different wires. It took a little while, and was a little complicated, but I finally got all wires reconnected and now have my gauge back, for both tanks. Hope the connections hold up when the winter weather comes! And, BTW, I did have two of the wires connected backwards.

I bought my 98 12 valve new and it did not take long for the fuel gauge to go bananas. When I saw it was going to require dropping the tank etc. and that it may still need to fixed again I decided to use the trip odometer. At first it is a nuisance but soon becomes a habit. When I fill up I set it back to zero and when I see 400 miles I fill up again. I also check my fuel milage at fill up time. I would bet that a lot of you do the same thing.
