My fuel gauge has been stuck on full for about 300 miles now. Anyone else had this problem? Any Ideas?

Looked at my manual and I see that the dam thing sends a signal to the PCM which sends a signal to the gauge. That sucks, makes fixin it more difficult. Any one know what the sender resistance specs are? Does the Resistance go up as the fuel level increases or does it go down?

I know lots of questions and I am probably just delaying the inevitable. Just tell me to drop the tank and replace the sender if that is the SOP. Just don't want to find out I have a defective PCM or something. Oh Yeah, Anything else I should do while the tank is down?

Thanks

This truck is a blast vto drive since the Raptor install!Oo.

hey trac. . same issue here all the time. . good news is that PCM is ok... the fix is that the float is stuck at "overfull". . (is there such a thing?). . take a 2x4 on the flat side and smack the bottom front on the tank and then around the front tank strap several times so as you see the thing shake like its scared of you. You can do this with it running or key on so you can watch the magic needle go down very slowly. . good luck. . sam :D

Finally it worked

I have been trying to fix things by banging on them for 30 years. It finally worked! I love it, felt like those monkeys on the commercial.

:)

Friend of mine took his '97 in under warranty for a stuck on full gauge, service writer laid on his back, kicked the tank several times and told him not to fill the tank to the brim anymore. He hasn't complained of a problem for five years.

While looking at my tank I noticed that the fuel sender location is well below the highest part of the tank. looks like close to 3 gallons below to me. Explains why the gauge reads the way it reads but makes me wonder about the not filling it to the brim thing. Seems the gauge float is at its highest point well before the tank is actually full.

Just curious anyone knocked any crud loose banging on the tank and have trouble soon afterwards. Just curious.

Thanks

Stuck on full... But...

I have run into this a few times myself, usually it fixes itself after 300 or more miles, but is quite irritating. I have only had it happen when I fill the tank w/ the engine running though.

I don't know why it cares if the engine is on or off, but if I do fill with it running that gauge will be stuck for most of that tank.

Maybe the float pushes upwards harder the deeper it's submerged???

The manual says to only fill the tank to the second click off with an automatic nozzle.

Hope you don't have any crud in your tank to knock loose.
