I haven't really checked into this problem too much, but I have a feeling I'm about due for a sending unit. I'm not worried about running out of fuel because the odometer works and I know what kind of mileage I am getting so that isn't an issue, and as far as I'm concerned it can stay broken.

What all does the sending unit in these trucks do?

I know in gassers they are usually the fuel pump too, but I know that's not the case.

I guess the question is... Is it really important for me to figure out what the problem is and, if it is the sending unit replace it immediately? Or can it wait?

Thanks in advance,

-R. J.

The sending unit in these trucks is an historic problem. And no its not part of the fuel pump. Its a PITA to replace although some people have had a lot of practice. Its not cheap either. I have 4 - 4x4s in concrete in the backyard and a block and tackle set up. I can pull off my bed in about 15 minutes by myself an viola! there is the tank, sending unit, fuel lines, etc, etc right there, easy to get at. I have just dropped the tank before but thats another problem. This way was just easier and I could take care of any other problems that may be showing up, like "rust"... Try to get a new sending unit from anyone other than the dealer, they are very expensive. . Do a search and you will get lots of info..... You could even modify yours and fix it yourself with a little mechanical experience... ... . Good luck..... Let us know how it works out... .

I repaired mine about a month ago without having to spend a dime. You probably don't have to replace your sending unit; it can likely be fixed pretty easily. If you search, you'll find some good threads. There are at least three different procedures documented for fixing the sending unit.

it might just be the valve floating thingie linkage ;)

Not too expensive if it's just that ... just takes some time to drop the tank (make sure it's as good as empty :-laf )

There are some very good suggestions here, but before you start removing the truck bed or drop the fuel tank do some simple checks first. Check for a blown out fuse and then trace your wiring to the tank checking for cuts or breaks.

My fuel gauge was erratic and sending unit fixed it. Dropped tank to replace. Disconnected fuel filler neck and two band straps. Make sure you are close to empty first.
