I am new to this forum, but I have a question. I have a 98 12v 2500. When the fuel level gets below 1/2 tank, the gauge drops to zero. When I fill up, the gauge returns to normal and works fine until 1/2 tank again. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this problem? Bad sending unit? Loose wires? Any help will be GREAT !!!

Do a search for fuel sending units and you will see many of us are in the same boat with inopriable gauges. Mine has been bad for about 2 years I just whatch the miles. THe sending unit is cheap but you either have to drop the tank or raise the bed to do the repair. Most stealers want 300-600 to do the repair. I saw on the Northwest Bombers site the sending unit is $40. 00. Good luck and welcome to the site. ONe warning it can become very addictive.

Fuel sendning unit

THe fuel sending unit is a poor design. It loosens up on the contacts and reads inaccurately. I removed mine and fixed with some simple parts for under $2. Took me a whole 2 hrs. and that was removing fuel tank. . I can send some details of the fix if you would like... Marc

fuel sending unit

The fix I used I got the idea from this info site- dodgeram.org/tech/repair/fuel_sender.htm. His fix involves machining and what not. I used common materials from Home Depot. I do not remember what size round stcok I used as I am at work. All I did was he said to do, but used some round bar like 5/32nd or close. drilled the body out and used spring and washer like he did. Has worked great for over 25k miles. THe best part is I finally convinced my wife that is DOES get better milage that my old pOwErStRoKe. Best thing I could of done... . I have pictures of my sending unit after fix at home. I can find them if someone wants. Marc

Marc-

Please email them to me. I would like to try your solution to the problem.

For all of the troubles that Ram owners are having with these, there should be a warranty issue on the sending units!!

Thanks in advance !!

I dropped the tank and just new screws (correctly and with Loctite) and it has lasted over 150K miles working great! Justtry to run the tank pretty low before you dropit. I also disconnected the breather tube and siphoned as much out as I could.

One more thing, DO NOT lay on the creeper under the fuel tank when you release the last bolt. It really hurts!!!!!
