I replaced the fuel gauge sending unit (FGSU), on my 97 twice. I had not heard anything bad about the later years FGSU's, so I figured they were fixed. Today the FGSU in my 2001 told me I was empty and the fuel light came on, well its not empty and the damn thing started working again about 10 miles later. I have about 32K on it now and if I can convince Dodge they will replace it under warranty. Should I take it in and have it replaced?

If you fish through Fritz's site you'll find a bulletin covering sending unit failures under warranty. It says something to the extent of 'on a full tank, the gauge will be stuck for about 200 or so milesbefore showing any movement'. And it said pretty much take the customers word on it. Even if you don't have the exact problem the bulletin says, I'd say make your complaint to read the exact same thing so they replace it for you.

fuel guage send unit

My 02 said I only had an 8th of a tank and the low fuel level light came on. When I filled it up, it only took 22 gals of diesel. (every time) They replace the sending unit (the whole module) and now it is probably the most accurate fuel guage I have ever seen in any vehicle

6 weeks ago had my sending unit replaced, gauge would drop to empty, setting off low fuel sounder, stay for few seconds, then come back. Replaced under my extended warrenty. Now:mad: my gauge has been buried on full for two tank fillups. Goes to the infamous stealer next week to be fixed along with the transmission:( another story.

My original sending unit had me sweating for over 50 miles once with the warning light on. I put 27 gallons in it at Page, AZ. It kept getting worse so I replaced it. That was within a year after I bought my truck in April '95. It's worked just fine every since. Tends to be slow moving in the upper half of the gauge and falls fast in the lower half, but when I fill it up I put in about what I would expect from where the needle is.

went to stealer Friday

I went to the service dept. and told them simply that my fuel sending unit was bad and needed to be replaced. I am sceduled to go in tommorrow, and let them fix it. I found out Saturday that I have to haul cows Tuesday, so I am going to reschedule. While at the dealer, I asked to speak to the "diesel mechanic" on duty. A man I know had left his 01 6speed there three times in the last month with a fuel problem. They had replaced the lift pump 3 times and it would run long enough for him to leave the parking lot, then die. I asked the diesel mechanic if the pickup had any diesel in it, he said yea it's got a quarter tank. About an hour later I talked to the guy that owned this pickup, and they had it fixed. Something about there was no fuel in the tank, but the gauge said there was. Huh, thats some good mechanicin'.

I'm starting to have the fuel sender problem on my 1996. Since I have a Transfer Flow aft axle tank, I switch to that tank for a few minutes. That seems to give the main tank's sender a little time to reflect on its petulance and get over its snit. So far, that does the job. I know it won't last long though. Eventually, the OEM sender will become catatonic or just stoic.

The sender that came with the Transfer Flow tank is fine. Does anyone know if that one is OEM or aftermarket? And can it be retrofitted into the OEM plastic tank?

On the other hand, I am looking for an excuse to install the Transfer Flow replacement tank.

Dodge is not the only auto maker with fuel sender problems. Just this week I replaced the sender on a 1997 Caddy Deville. It looked just like the one I replaced on my 95 Ram except it was twice the money ($90)!!!

WHERE do you buy the sending unit for $45?

In Denver they want $68. 80:--) Email me if I can order one over the phone. THANKS

I have a 99 3500 that comes off warranty any day with a sending unit that sticks off scale high. DC put a new one in two months ago and I have the same problem. Happened on 1st. fill up after repair. DC ordered another so when I can lay the truck they will try again. My DC dealer is the best.

Make sure you don't have Christopher Dodge in Golden replace your sending unit, or anything else for that matter.

They convinced me that "the fuel tank was so badly damaged that they couldn't replace the sending unit without replacing the tank".

$550 plus $350 labor, just for the tank.

When I picked up the old tank, I couldn't see ANYTHING at all wrong with it. Hardly even scratched. They told me that you couldn't see the damage unless the tank was installed in the hangers.

Yeah, right !!!
