Ok, so we installed a brand new Autometer fuel level gauge with correct OHM sweep, and hooked up the gauge signal wire to the DB/WHT sender wire directly off the sender unit. I still do not read any fuel level and I am wondering if maybe my sender is bad. It worked perfect just prior to swapping in the 12valve engine so maybe we are doing the wiring incorrectly? Has anyone put an aftermarket gauge in their 24valve truck? If you have, can you please tell me what I am doing wrong... . I am at my wits end with this thing.

Can the sender go out just like that with no warning? I have never experienced that kind of problem before so it just does not make any sense to me. How common do these senders go bad?

Fuel Sender

Its not all that bad. I dropped the tank, took out the big canister, and cleaned the screen and removed the sending unit. Then you can clean the sender, hook it up to the wires from your new guage. You can then move the sending unit from lowerest (empty) to highest (full), and see how it reads on your guage. You must of course hook it up to 12volts. The problems with these senders include; any contamination of the sliding pickup against the coil, will change the resistance, which changes the voltage reading at the meter, cleaning the resister coil and slider will often get it back to reading properly, but contamination can get on again, especially if you have a dirty tank, so clean tank before putting it back, the other problem is that the Ohm values given in the manual are not the same as the senders, I tried three new senders trying to get the indicated spec value, never could. So I cleaned old sender, it has worked OK since. For safety I installed an after market sender and guage, so I have a backup fuel guage system. Hope this helps
