150 miles on a tank of gas and fuel gauge goes to full

Third time this has happened.

11. 743 miles this time
9400 miles time before
921 miles first time

Dealer has fixed it previous two times without too much of a headache, but this is starting to get annoying.

Truck is 2 years old, 99 2500 extended cab short bed.

No other problems with the truck just this.

Called the service manager and he is looking into to until I bring it in on Tuesday 4/23/01.

I want to know why it's doing it so it don't do it again. Another 12 months and it's out of warranty.

Anybody have similar situation and/or any ideas what's causing this?

Thanks

There was quite a bit if discussion on this a few months ago. Some of the guys had found a way to "bomb" the sender to keep this from happening. Search the archives for the threads. Fuel sender getting stuck is quite common on our trucks. You may want to try smacking the bottom of the tank with a big rubber mallet, sometimes that will be enough to free it.

A friend of mine had the same problem. When he took it in the service writer laid on the ground and kicked the fuel tank, it worked fine for awhile. Others have reported that a rubber mallet also works good. I have also heard that you should never fill the tank all the way to avoid this problem.

All the above is BS, if you are still under warranty make sure they replace the sender instead of blows and warnings.

I have a 99 2500 also and I had the truck fixed twice and the gauge failed shortly after. I third time I found TSB for the repair on the roundtable. Unfortunatly I don't remember the number. I took it to my dealer and we looked it up on the computer and they had to order the correct complete module. I have had no further problems in over 10,000 miles. Maybe someone will know the TSB fix or have the dealer check his computer.

Thanks for your response.

Will be looking up the TSB's and past articles.

Will defenitely mention the TSB to the manager when I take it in.

Will post outcome of repairs.

Thanks again

My 99 3500 has done this to me twice. Most recent occurrence was in January. It stayed on full, however. Both times after running about 60 or so miles, the sender "fixed" itself. Of course all of this happened after the truck was out of the factory warranty. #ad

My truck does this also. I have noticed, after filling, when it gets down to about 3/4 tank, if I get into road conditions that would cause the fuel to really slosh around in the tank, it will go to "full" and stay there. I quit worrying about it because it always heals itself the next time I fill up.

Picked up truck this evening.

Dealer put in a "new modified" part. Still mopar, which really gives me a warm fuzzy.

But the gauge is reading correctly now.

They say I shouldn't ever have this problem again. Highly unusual for a "99" to have this problem. 98's yes, but not 99's.

One guy is supposed talk to the DC truck guy and ask whats up.

I asked him to call me with that response.

This same guy who will call DC says since I've had a reoccurring problem, that this will be covered for the life of the truck. I hope so, and I hope I don't need it.

I'd like that in writing though and it would be nice to hear it from factory rep.

Thanks again for your responses.

Here's some links I had bookmarked, so I can fix mine when I get a chance. http://www.chesco.com/~rosenberry/diesel/Dodgesender.htm https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum17/HTML/000434.html http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/technical/electrical/fuel_sender-diy.htm

Ive had mine fixed three times , the first time it was stuck on empty , then on full the next two times. The last time the dealer dropped the tank they replaced everything (module)in the tank, no problems in a year.

This still works for me:

I never never never top off the tank and usually do not see the gauge lock up.

The only times this did not work is at the same pump which seems to cause a ton of foam in the tank.
