For the last few weeks my fuel gauge has been acting funny. It will read what it should then drop to E after driving awhile. I can stop and fire back up in a few seconds and the gauge will operate ok for a while. Question is ,which computer do the dash gauges work off of? I'm guessing the ECM. Next question, what do I look for ?
Thanks in advance for the help.

The fuel level sending unit is a common problem on 12 valve Dodges.

A search of this forum entering; "sending unit", or "fuel gauge", will result in several threads that cover diagnosis, and repair.

Unhappily, the fix (even the diagnosis) requires either removing the truck's box, or fuel fuel tank.

The following is from Missouri Mule:

"Fuel gauge testing. 1.turn key to on position. Disconnect then fuel pump module connector. The neddle should go to low end of gauge scale. If Ok go to step 2,if not go to step 4.
step 2. connect jumper wire between the sending unit ground circuit cavity and the fuel sensor signal cavity of fule pump module wiring connector.
the needle should move to high end of scale. If Ok replace faulty sending unit. If not Ok go to step 4.
Step 3 turn key to off position. disconnect adn isolate negative battery cable.Check for continuity between sending ground circuit cavity of fuel pump moduule connector and good ground. there should be continuity. If Ok go to dstep 4. If not ok g,repair open circuit to ground.
step 4. remove intstrument cluster bezel and cluster assembly.Disonnect the right cluster connector.
step 5. probe the fule level sensor signla circuit cavity of the right cluster connector. check for continuity to a good ground. there should bo no continuity. If Ok go to step 6. If not Ok repair short short circuit as required.
Step 6. check for continuity between fuel levle sensor signal cavity or right connector and fule pum module connector. there should be continuuity. If Ok repalce faulty gauge. If not ok repair the open circuit as required. "

Mine is the 24 value 98.5 truck. Thanks but I just don't think it's the sending unit. It just doesn't act like it. The oil presure gauge is not acting right either.

I have had my 2014 Ram 3500 at the dealer for a week under warranty for similar issue. Changed in tank module for pump and level sensor. Did not fix. Per dealer network, in process of tracing wires for short or loose wire. Concern I have is that I added a Transfer Flow, Inc 37 gal tank which operates a fuel pump in tank based on fuel level that fits under a Pace Edwards motor driven cover. Tank and cover were added after delivery buy 3rd parties. Difference is my oil pressure gauge seems to be fine and fuel tank level returns without shutting off and turning back on. Fuel gauge will go to zero and when gage level returns to active an alarm ding sounds. level seems to wander a little after each event. Hard to catch and even harder to troubleshoot as it is intermittent. Back to dealer on Tuesday
