The fuel gauge in my 98 12 valve seems to be stuck on full or the fuel mileage has improved significantly. I have driven 300 miles and the gauge still shows full.

Is this a problem with an easy fix, or does in require dropping the tank and changing the sender. Thanks, Jeff

Just aguess here but drop the tank and change the sender.

PS. If you want to REALLY check it out, throw a can of diesel in the back. It will probably go from full to completely empty in a few miles. I had this happen to mine and relied on the odometer for a while (doesn't work if it's shut off though) so I ran out a few times before I broke down and changed the sender. That was over 200K ago and still working though.

Good luck.

Mine used to be dead on accurate when the light came on I could guarantee eight gallons or more left. Now it's less than four and I really don't trust it. Is it the fuel sender? If so, how much work is it to fix and what makes them go bad. 54,000 miles so far and this just started in the last 4-5,000 miles.

I have heard that a whack on the tank when almost empty can some times get it working again . I would place a plywood of at least a foot square on bottom of tank and hit it with a rubber mallet a time or two ,. Some times the filling with hi pressure fill pump at truck stop with handle wide open can and will stick the float unit. Just a thought other than that its drop the tank , seems like a access hole and cover would save time and money . Ron in Louisville KY:{ :D

Or if nothing in bed..

do the 2man bed removal... ... HMMMM not a bad idea for a side line -- making an access door/plate for above the tank sender SS with ridges to match bed contours... ... ... ...

SOTSU!! (just waiting)
