Fuel Gel

These questions have been asked before but I missed that meeting, so I'm going to ask anyway.
1. At what temperature will diesel gel?
2. What additive will I need to cobat the problem?

Well let me tell ya what I do. Above 0 degree temp I run #2 and put additive in it or mix with #1. Depending on conditions (wind and such). Right now it is 1 degree outside. I have aout 75% 2 in it parked in the garage. Below zero temps I run mostly 1 as I do like to freeze and do not want to walk with a new truck. lol You should be ok in cold areas with just #2 the fuel circulates and is warmed a little that way.

Straight #2 diesel begins gelling at 6° to 10°F. If that ever happens in Salinas you may as well kiss most of California good-bye.

No it doesn't get that cooled in Salinas. I'm headed up to Tahoe for the first time in my new truck where it's about 10° at night. I'm wondering if I'm going to have any problems starting in the morning.

Buy a $5 can of Stanadyne fuel conditioner and it will last 2 tank fulls.

Brent,you probably won't have a problem in Tahoe but I'd add some diesel additive from an auto parts just in case. I like Power Service myself. It's also a good idea to open the water drain on your fuel filter before you hit the cold country. You won't have starting problems as long as your batteries are in good shape.

One other thought... plug in your heater at night. Helps a lot with the starting process in cold temperatures, but you probably already knew that. Dave
