fuel guage stopped working

my fuel guage on my 03 is sitting on empty ..... low fuel light is on and the truck is full of fuel..... is there a way to check the problem without dropping the tank?





if i have to drop the tank are there instructions someplace to do it ?

Welcome to the Turbo Diesel Register.



If your problem is in the sender unit I found it was much easier to remove the left side and loosen the right side bed bolts. Unplug the rear lights also.



To raise one side of the bed your diesel fuel is not an issue.

Depending on how far you want ot go with the correction.



You can (as indicated above) raise the bed to get to the fuel cannister /or/

You can drop the tank to get to the fuel cannister.



Once you are at the fuel cannister.



You can repair the fuel level sender (several threads on that approach) /or/



You can replace the fuel level sender (I think guys get them from DC) /or/



I have a thread of getting rid of the fuel level sender totally by replacing it with a mechanical unit mounted at a different location on the tank (drilling a hole in the top of the tank etc etc etc)



Some guys have a problem with the float deteroiating and there are threads on that.



You choose how far you want to go.

Or take a rubber hammer or suitable tool and hit center of tank. Don't try to slam it but a few good taps and see if any movement from gauge. If it does react at leasft you know your in the correct place to repair.
