The Fuel Heat Sensor end burned up on my truck. Bummer! Has anyone ever gone thru this?

I went to Cummins, they told me in about a week & $200 later, I can have a new one.

Has anyone ever replaced this unit? It looks like I have to take off the fuel transfer pump together with the fuel heater assembly. Am I correct?

Is there any electrical or fuel problems by not running this heater?

Thanks

If you have a 12 valve (sounds like you might) pulling the transfer pump is how you get the fuel heater off. No big deal to change except for limited space for your hands. I changed my transfer pump a few weeks ago and the fuel heater came off with it. As far as needing the heater, you won't have any problems unless the weather gets cold enough to cause fuel waxing that could clog the filter. Once the engine is warm that probably won't happen either even if it gets well below freezing. I think in most parts of the country you won't need the heater again until next Fall.

Mine burned up. I had to buy the whole heater/pre-filter assembly to get a new one. I tried calling Cunnins (not available seperately) and even took the number of the new one when I got it (not a good number).

BUT someone here has found the part number for a new one. Look here.

fuel heater r&r

Gentleman start your wrenches.

:) Here is the poop on fuel heater R & R.

My first attemt at Cummins, bring your credit card, they tried to sell me the entire assembly. Part # 3847102 for $196 plastic dollars.

I reviewed the website & found a variety of part #'s.

The cable harness # 3843722-s $48. 84

The heater element #3907766-s $34. 80

The strainer kit #3845400-s $7. 47

It turns out that the only thing I needed was the CABLE HARNESS. I e-mailed Fleetguard and asked if this was a growing problem. thier reply was no, but they will keep it in mind.

My guess was a little water squeeked in & shorted the unit out. I did just wash the engine compartment down. I don't know how anything squeezed in there its way to tight. I remember an olr girlfriend---- no don't go there!

The R & R was easy & quick.

I removed the 2 small torx screws from the top. I unplugged the other 2 plug -ins. My only problem was the remaining cap from the harness left inside the small indentation. It came out easy with a small screwdriver.

I replaced the 2 small torx screws.

For the price of $52. 62 & a 30 minute goofing off session, I was done.

I trust this will help anyone who runs into this problem later.
