fuel heater-strainer
My sons 98 12V just had a transmission rebuild and would not start. The thermostat wires on the heater were fried. The transmission guys used ether to get it to fire. Guess what? No, it didn't blow up because it was still in the shop and the toasters did not come on. I am back in the morning to bleed the system and see if we can get it home. I will try the compressed air bleed to get fuel up to the filter and then on the pump.
The transmission guys tried to tell me the fuel was gelling with 40 degree weather outside and the fuel heater needed to be replaced. Dealer $256, Cummins $154: Cummins P/N 3847102-S.
I am going to pull the heater and see if we can repair the harness if the thermostat is not shorted out to the case. My bet is that it will be shorted and then I am into a new heater/strainer. Cummins does not use a preheater on any of their engines. This is a Dodge component and it comes from Fleetguard.
