Does anyone have the part number for the threaded fuel filter adapter that will eliminate the fuel heater & take the place of the present threaded adapter that holds the fuel heater between the fuel filter and the head? I would like to get rid of the heater/spacer. I believe Greenleaf mentioned this in an earlier post but I do not recall a part number.

I don't know if I have the pn. It's simply a threaded pipe (nipple) that the filter element threads onto. Not all application use the heater element as most probably are aware.

I have yet to remove one from either of my trucks but it's certainly one of the 27 items that are not required. :)

How to remove fuel heater on 90 CTD

I am trying to figure out how to remove the fuel heater between the head and the fuel filter. It is leaking fuel. I tried to spin it off, but it did not seem to seperate any. I would greatly appreciate any advice. The problem seems to be the cause of a terrible miss.

IIRC, it is only held on by the threaded pipe fitting that the filter spins onto. Should be able to remove fitting, remove heater thing, then screw the fitting back in , anyone else?

No. The fuel heat adapter pipe nipple is too long. I have removed one and found that I would have to replace the pipe nipple with a shorter one.

If you remove the nipple you will see what I mean. Try it for yourself. It can't harm anything. The square cut seal ring will likely need replaced to prevent a fuel leak at the heater.

I would caution againt the urge to ues vice grips. The fuel filter must thread onto the bottom of that nipple you just destroyed. :D

FAT screwdriver, chisel or I used a long prybar (as a screwdriver) from underneath the truck, with a wrench used to turn the prybar.

The industrial engines, (that don't have a heater) have a hex for an allen head inside the middle of the nipple. If it has primary and secondary filters the nipple has a nut to hold the extra housing, then the filter screws on. I've never looked inside the one on the truck to compare.

Have part number

After a little research i have come up with the part number that allows the elimination of the fuel heater. Cummins part # 3925954 "Filter Head Adapter" and yes it has the internal hex for installation instead of the cheesy slot for a screwdriver. Cost approximately $15.

This is what I found that worked great for removal. A washer of the correct thickness, about an inch in diameter. You can grab the washer with pliers or whatever.

I also just got a new square cut seal from the local Cummins dealer for my fuel heater. I think it was less than $2. My seal was lost when the engine shop took it all apart during my headgasket repair.
