Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Pressure?

Hey Guys,

I have a fuel heater out in my 1998 24 valve Dodge. The dealer says the part costs $1100. I live in Hailey, Idaho so it is too cold to not fix it. Does anyone know of a cheaper after market part, or have any idea of what might have caused it to fail.

Thanks,

Alex

It's $1100 because the parts are no longer made, they install a kit to upgrade the older truck to the new style filter housing and heater. It only heats the fuel right before it goes to the injection pump, as long as your fuel doesn't gel in the tank you should be fine without it. Only way I know of to get a direct replacement is a salvage yard, then you're probably getting the same thing you have now.

The fuel heater has an internal control. When the fuel is 45 degrees or less it varies the resistance of the heater. The fuel heater relay is at the PDC and energizes any time you start the truck or it is running from the ignition switch. In other words you will have power at the heater all the time that this relay is energized and if the internal control gets flaky you can burn up the element or the control will stay open and the heater will not work. You can check out this thread in case I have missed something here.

I believe the one Hoesli shows is for a 12 valve. Would not hurt to call them with your engine SN and ask about yours tho.

PM me.

I know a fellow on TDR who has what you need for $30. I put a TDR classified ad up looking for one but found one locally for $20. His reply came after I already purchased one locally from yet another TDR NWB member.

I just had the fuel heater replaced on my 97 about a month or so ago. Parts cost less then $300 and less $600 including labor. Not sure if it is the same as the one on your 98 24 valve or why yours would be $1100.

You might consider a Davco system. I suspect it wouldn't be as expensive as what they are quoting you and would provide some other advantages.
