Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fass Question

i mean water in diesel? where did I get fuel in diesel? lol

I called Industrial Injection to find out why I wasn't credited my $400 core. They said it wasn't rebuildable because of internal rust. :-{} He said I must have had water in my fuel, but the light never came on. I always got diesel at the same station. I asked him to send it back to me. I don't know what I will do with it but he is not getting it if he isn't going to give me any money for it. What can i do to correct this problem, so I don't rust-up another? fuel additive? I have a fass on now with my new vp-44 and I bypassed the original fuel filter. Only now the "water in fuel" light comes on, but I bypassed the sensor(since it is in the bottom of the fuel filter housing?). i don't know I need some help.

Thanks

Nathan

Without any further info, I gotta say bypassing the water filter is not good.

I do not know if the FASS has a water separator, if not, put the stock filter back inline, you already have one.

Not much help, I'm afraid. Just an opinion.

Good luck.

I would run some additive like stanadyne if you think your getting water in your fuel. It sounds as thou you have bypassed the OEM FF/water separator with the addition of the FASS. I have a FASS and still have my OEM FF in-line so when it gets cold I have the use of the Heater as well as the water separator. When you bypassed the water separator did you just unplug it? How did you bypass the sensor?

My Fass has a water separator. But I don't know what to do. I don't want to void my pumps warranty the same way . The light just won't go off. I put some Diesel Kleen in my tank when I filled up yesterday. :(

If you put the OEM FF back in place and plug in the wiring harness to it, will the water light go out. FYI When I first installed my FASS which sounds like the same set up you have. I left the OEM FF out of the loop and system and unplugged and never got a light.

I just bypassed the filter when i added the FASS, and I assumed I by-passed the sensor when I did that. I didn't think I had water in my fuel until I talked to the guys from Ind Inj. and now my light has come on. I think because all the fuel evaporated out of the filter housing. I live in Oklahoma no extreme cold temps do I need the heater? If I filled the filter up with clean diesel would the light go out? When I unplugged the sensor the light didn't go out. I didn't leave it unplugged but for a few seconds and the truck was running while was doing that if it makes a difference.

There should be a drain cock on the bottom of it. If not I would open it up and drain it out, that should turn the light off. If it does not I would plumb it back in the system and continue to use it. In the factory state when the light comes on because of water detected in the fuel @ the FF. you need to drain some fuel from the FF housing to wash it out. Water should have never gotten to the VP if it was working right, which it does not sound as thou it is or was.

Sound as thou you might have a wiring issue if you can unplug it and still have the light. Have you checked for codes? Check all electrical connections, clean and use dielectric grease.

How water gets through filters happens like this. Water collects in the fuel tank from condensation, leaving fuel cap off or contamination from another fuel source (fuel station, refinery or remote fuel tank) Water collects in the filter and puddles in the bottom. The water sitting in the filter breaks down the filter paper with time. The compromised filter paper now has larger holes that let the water/dirt through. Some filters have filter paper that has been treated and is usually called water stop paper. They work better and last longer but will also break down if water is puddled in the filter long enough. Your Fass fuel system is a very nice product, but you should use good quality filter elements which hopefully use water stop paper or what ever trade name they use for the same type of paper. Using a smaller micron rated final filter is a good idea but changing the filters more often is the best idea. If you have a contaminated fuel tank you will need to drop the tank and clean it out completely. We deal with dirt and water on a daily basis. We charge for a bad core when the inside of the pump looks like it has been living at the bottom of the ocean. Thanks, Brady 1-800-955-0476

How I changed my fuel system,

I use a RACOR 690 (10 micron, water block filter) FIRST thing in the fuel system when it comes out of the tank before anything, and change it regularly (15k, might change it more often now?) and check the visual bowl regularly (3 / week, every other day) and drain it generally when I check it. Occassionally get a couple of small dropplets of water and some particulate brown residue.

Way oversized (2x) the filter for our 45 gph engine so very little suction restriction.

I recirculate the fuel constantly (RASP bypass, and VP return) and filter the entire tank several times an hour.

Brady - IF I have a flaw in my thinking / fuel system PLEASE point it out

Oh, OEM ff / heater does not exist.
