Diagram of a 3rd gen injector?

Will Smarty Jr read/clear codes on 2nd gen?

Ran my truck a couple of thousand miles for a hunting trip a few weeks ago. I was pulling a 6k trailer and had the SMARTY on level one with all default settings. In the middle of Nevada my truck threw a code and then went in to limp mode. I checked the codes and tried to reset w/ SMARTY, but truck kept going in to limp mode (45mph max) and showed up the following codes: P2128, P0088, P2121, P0653, P0193. Called Carson Dodge and as it was Friday afternoon they were closing for the weekend. Frustrated and bent out of shape I drove west for over two hours to Reno to Lithia Chrysler where they checked my truck and discovered that the fuel rail poppet (pressure relief) valve was blown out and no longer holding fuel. They took real good care of me and had me back on the road at noon on Saturday. Needless to say I was surprsed that this happened. I don't tow past 70mph and I don't hot rod up the grades (55mph) so I am still wondering why this happened. The mechanic said the fuel pressure relief valve may have been damaged by intermittent use of the Edge /Juice or the SMARTY set on the higher settings and this outing was the final straw despite the fact that I was not racing down the highway. Anyway, just a heads up to those of you who are exceeding the OEM fuel rail pressure settings on these trucks.

This failure in trucks with increased rail pressure is not uncommon, by any means. If I had a pressure box I might even consider carrying a spare relief valve with me.

Even if rail pressure is reasonable during the use of power, it tends to “spike” much higher when you let off the accelerator pedal. Marco, the Smarty guru, feels added rail pressure is effective for adding power but is the last thing you should do, and only if “necessary” for that big, winning number. He has not seen any fuel economy gains from added rail pressure. If you are going to use increased rail pressure, I recommend getting a solid plug from Floor-It Diesel (Home) to replace the pressure relief valve. It is a direct and exact fit, easy to install.

I would say this is an extremely bad idea. Very high probability of failure. That rail is running around 23000 psi!

There are a few ways to cap the rail and I agree it might not be the best way but it is fairly common practice in the performance crowd.

If it doesn't have a harness to the rail pressure sender, it doesn't add pressure. If it doesn't have a harness to the crank and cam sensors, it can't add much if any timing afaik. The Edge EZ adds pressure. Of course the Smarty can do both, but it works inside the ECM unlike external boxes.
