What oil companies do is what every retailer in every industry does.



Oil companies do have reserves of finished products, diesel fuel and gasoline, in storage tanks to keep a continuous supply available and flowing.



But they know that they will pay a far higher but yet unknown price for crude oil to replenish current stocks. So it is just normal business practice in any industry to increase the price of current inventory in order to provide the capitol to purchase replacement raw material supplies.



Do you REALLY think that the oil companies just have fuel laying around in storage tanks waiting for the price to go up so they can sell what they have in storage for some absorbent price gouge. Thats really funny the little rack that I pulled out of ran thru 1 1/2 million gallons a day thats 24 hours. They had 4 facilities ours was the least amount pumped in 24 hrs. So think about the above statement and really think about how many tanks and how big they would have to be. I dont agree with whats going on Im sure they are making a profit but im also sure its not as big as one might think. But just to defend myself ill make it JMO. As a edit I went down to the refinery the other day for a retirement party for one of the big wigs. Went out to the plant to say hi to some of the refinery guys. They are in the process of building more molecule crackers for JUST diesel. One of the guys said that 2 of the 4 are for the, well I dont know how to put this but some folks wouldnt light their trash pile with the stuff. BIO D. Like it or not its going to happen just like Ethanol did and even thats going up in gas. You just cant build these things in a day its taking time with all of Commie Cal's regs for green

All the above still dosen't prove why diesel has gotten to be so exspensive compared to it's pricing history.



Is it because light duty diesels became so popular and there are/were too many ding dongs driving diesels in the US?

Yes, it has. IIRC, over half the vehicles sold in Europe today are diesels. European emissions standards and taxation policies encourage the use of diesels as they generate less carbon dioxide than gasoline engines.



In addition, China and India consume ever-increasing amounts of diesel to fuel the construction equipment used to build their growing infrastructures.



Because of this, the U. S. was recently exporting diesel to Europe and importing gasoline from their refineries for which there was no market in Europe.

Duh. Too bad the idiots running the show here in Ca seem to believe that diesel is suddenly toxic and is the cause of Asthma in young children and creates (X) amount of pre-mature deaths yearly.

Emissions regulations in Europe and most of the world focus on greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide where diesels have an advantage due to higher efficiency (you burn less carbon, you make less carbon dioxide). Unfortunately, U. S. emissions standards focus on oxides of nitrogen (a smog precursor) and particulates where diesels operate at a disadvantage.

The US energy policy for vehicles and power generation is still stuck in the 1970's. Now, we're starting to pay the price for it. Don't worry, though, Congress is going to fix it after they finish debating same-sex marriage and abortion funding. That should take another 40 years.
 
I don't know why the government can not subsidize diesel fuel like it does ethanol. If they kept the fuel prices lower, maybe everything else would not go out of site.



I am not sold on ethanol one bit. My company van is a flex fuel. I get 14-16mpg running regular. I get 10-12 mpg running E-85. My 99 Ram gets 15-17mpg pulling a 5k trailer. You do the math. Not to mention, it has pushed corn to record high prices again and you know who is going to pay for that.



One more thing. On Wednesday I went to work and fuel at the local speedway was 3. 49 for diesel, 3. 19 for regular. When I came home, 3. 75 for diesel, 3. 49 for regular. REALLY??#@$%!

IMO the reason diesel is more $ is because when they make gas somewhere along the process they come up with diesel. When they take the diesel out of the process they have to start making gas from scratch again go past the diesel in the process and make gas. And because there are more gas motor cars than diesel they charge more for the diesel because they have to stop making the more popular gas. Did that make any sense. They are building more diesel crackes just for diesel thats where the process will stop so they arent taking up the gas space in the process, MAN I GOT TO QUIT MAKING MY OWN BEER THIS STUFF SHOULD HAVE A WARNING ON IT

West, you'd see gas come down but our own

Federal gov't is our own worse enemy. It's time for civil rebellion like what is happening in the Mid East... laugh, but you know I'm right.

You are correct, Mark. Likewise in the Gulf of Mexico. We have plenty of resources but the dictator has restricted exploration and drilling.

You must be brewing the high octane stuff. Can it be used to increase Cetane level in diesel fuel?

Yeah, your defiantly right on the government screwing everything they touch up. I was thinking that they take the subsidizes for ethanol and put it towards diesel instead, but I see the way they have that screwed up too. So it best they just stay out of it.



I was told a couple of years ago by a Marathon Petroleum refinery worker, that ULSD costs more to make, that is why it costs more at the pump. I don't know weather there is any truth behind that or not. It sounds more like an excuse than anything.
 
The mandated ethanol in the gas is a real winner. Fuel economy suffers and the cost of everything mildly connected to corn skyrockets. Way to go. Two examples are the cost of beef and of course a good 'ol ear of corn in season. :{

Yes, it costs more to produce. Here's an Energy Information Administration paper discussing the production complexities of ULSD. Also, Federal and many state fuel taxes are higher on diesel than on gasoline, their logic being (rightly or wrongly) that 18-wheelers should pay more for road construction and maintenance (even though they already do so even with the same tax rate as gasoline since they consume more fuel per mile) since they cause more damage to the roadways.
