Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Leak at #6 injector.

Got a new injector pump last week under warranty. Noticed fuel under truck right at trans to engine area. Took back to dealer after 2 attempts to stop fuel leak they ordered new fuel lines. Picked up truck today-drove home-fuel dripping on ground.

Is there a seal in the fuel line to injector? Or is it a compression type seal? I'll be putting in some DDIII's to replace the 275's in there when they arrive from Piers so I'm not sure how they seal as a friend put in the 275's while I was working.

can you see it leaking? Just wondering if you can tell exactly where the leak is comming from. Mine is leaking around the return line in the rear of the head. Seems as though you have to replace the sealing washers on the banjo bolt when removed, DOH!



The injector lines themselves are a taper type seal. They shouldn't leak unless the retaining nut is loose, which is possible.

The line to the head is a compression type, the connection tube between the line and the injector has an O-ring on it. They possibly could have cut or rolled the O-ring , or didn't make sure the line seated in the connector tube correctly when installing the lines. Another thing to check is the fuel return line , it T's in back under the #6 inj. line . It is a 16mm fitting you could try tightening it, the injector lines are 19mm. Hope this helps, or gives you an idea of what to look at.

If it is hard to determine the source of the leak you can add uv dye to fuel and use a black light to check

is the leak on the 96 or 99?



I can't help on the 96.



if on the 99, I just was working back there recently on a problem I am chasing. Fuel leaking from the number 6 fuel line connection could be coming from only a couple places as I see it. obviously, if the conection is not tight, the leak could be right where the fuel line connects to the head. actually it just looks like it connects to the head. the line mates with a connecting tube that passes through the head to the injector. if tight, but dirt got in between the line and tube connecting surfaces, the leak could still be right there. There is an o-ring around the connecting tube that bridges between it and the head. if the o-ring has failed, fuel can run along the connecting tube and out the head at the connection. Again, dirt between the connecting tube and injector or that same loose fitting (it is the hardest one to get at, and hard to judge when tight as you can only get ~5 degrees of turn using a normal length 3/4 inch wrench... even when cheating by holding the wrench at a big angle). There is an o ring on the injector, but it is above the connection between injector and tube (it keeps oil off the injector) and shouldn't see fuel. The last place I can think that would permit fuel past is the copper washer/shim around the injector tip base... again dirt or lose injector hold down. And of course the return line runs back there. hope this is some help and good luck.

Dodge replaced the #6 injector line from the injector pump to injector. Then fuel was leaking past where the injector line goes thru the large retaining nut on injectors 1 and 3. Dodge (4th visit) tech disconnected injector nut on 1 and 3 and reconnected. It appears to have stopped on 1 but 3 still has a small amount of fuel still seeping out around the injector line thru the retaining nut. I will be installing DDIII's next weekend so I hope I can get the leak stopped.
