I have a fuel leak and am in Port st Lucie Florida staying with my son. I have a 1996 4x4. Leak started while truck was running, I replaced the return hose and the fuel filter. No luck! cleaned the engine, and now cannot get it to leak at idle. If I drive around at 40-50 mph, I have so much fuel in the engine compartment, drivers side, that I cannot tell where it is coming from. My next step is to try to duplicate the engine speed while in neutral and in the driveway to see if I can tell where the leak is. Is this okay? Then what? I am a 3 at the most mechanic. We were going to travel today, but obviously couldn't afford to keep the fuel tank full. We have access to high speed internet and local phone service. Land line 772 879 3014, cell 303 881 7422 and call Skip or Judy. Help!!! any would be appreciated. Last but not least, is there any danger of fire in the engine compartment?

Fuel Leak

Had a friend call me and said that his '95 was leaking fuel all over the engine. We found that the fuel line from the filter to the injector pump was cracked where the line hooks to the pump. The Mopar replacement line is now made flexible so there must have been a problem with vibrations eventually causing cracking. While it's running, move the line gently and see if it shoot fuel.

Sounds like the fuel return line. There's a rubber flex hose connecting the lines on the engine to the steel lines that run back to the tank. They tend to get old, deteriorate and start to leak. It's tough to see exactly where the leak is and even harder to change the line. If you do a search for return line you'll be reading for hours and get plenty of info. on what to do.

Hope this helps,

Mike

fuel leak

Suspect around places that have a change in shape or a fuel gasket leaking. Have you changed any thing in the fuel area lately??

As Damar mentioned about his friends truck, mine too was the line between the filter and the injection pump. Yes the mopar replacement is flexible, but the Cummins part is as well and cost 80 bucks less.
