my truck is 2 months shy of being 7 years old. i have a fuel leak again. i'm hoping it is the return fuel line. my question is , is there a special hose i should be using? this is the third time i had to have this line replaced. i have 145,000 on the clock. is it a mileage thing ? or does the line have to be replaced every 2 years. this is the only problem i've had with my truck so i guess i'm better off then a lot of ram owners. i just want to put a line on and forget about it.

You have to use hose that is for diesel. The gasoline type doesn't work. I've changed mine twice now. The first time I just went to a parts store and got some hose that was ok for gasoline so I thought it would work ok. No so. The second time I got some hose from the local Dodge dealer. That was about 80K miles ago. No leaks so far.

go to your local auto parts store and look for some fuel line made by Gates. Make sure it performs to SAE spec that you can easily find by searching around on this site. I think it is something like J30R7 but dont quote me on that. You will find this fuel line is inexpensive and good quality.

Joe:

What is the secret to changing that hose. The local dealer wants $275. 00 to change it. Said the front drive link and starter had to be dropped. I don't mind changing it , if I know the best way. The more I work on the truck the more relaxed I get.

Thanks.

The starter is easy to drop. 10mm 12 point socket or wrench will do it. Don't forget to disconnect the batteries before messing with the wires. The other thing to do is to remove the nuts that attach the master cylinder to the booster and lean it out of the way. Now you can reach the clamps at the top of the hoses and the clamps at the bottom. It's still kind of a PITA. It's best to change both hoses while you are at it.

While you have the starter out on your work bench you might want to check the condition of the contacts in the solenoid. If they are getting bad it's a good idea to fix now instead of waiting until you have to.
