When I was walking beside my 99 2500 this afternoon, I smelled diesel fuel. I got down underneath and the bottom and inside (side closest to the drive shaft) of the fuel tank was wet with diesel fuel. I wiped it off and then looked down between the cab and the bed on the drivers side. I can see what I think is the fuel tank sending unit (kind of a big white plastic nut on top) and it was also wet. I am guessing that it is leaking either from the gasket for the sender unit (which does not work very well anymore) or a diesel return or supply hose. I am also remembering that the easiest way to get to this, is to unbolt and lift the bed up for access.

Am I on the right track or is there something I am missing?

Thanks, Doug

JoeG has an excellent write-up on problems with the fuel system. The first few pages refer to the area you describe. I believe Joe would be happy for me to give it to you, so if you PM me your email address I could attach it to an email to you. Alternatively, you could PM JoeG direct.

Nick.
