fuel level gauge problems

Pulled the bed today to install a FASS system. It wasn't necessary but I also have a fuel gauge issue that I wanted to tackle at the same time.



My gauge reads full/3/4's all the time and then suddenly reads empty and gives off the low fuel warning tone. I'll turn off the engine and restart and it goes back to normal,... . sometimes. Just never reads right.



Anyone have suggestions while the bed is off?

More then likely the little resistor in the fuel sender has gone bad. Doubt it is worth trying to take apart and fix.

Alright, so does this mean I have to buy a complete unit then? Any idea on price?

I have not had to do one for a long time. In the mid 90's they were about $75, and yes it was a complete sending unit.

Wow, do the fuel tank vent mod if the bed is off while ur at it.

While your off, pull the sending unit/pump and inspect the float arm and wiring. Move the arm to different positions and cycle the key to get a new reading on the gauge. There is a damping effect built into the cluster to stop large fast sweeps, so you may have to leave the key off for a bit between movements to see it change. Then disconnect the sender and see where the gauge goes. I'm guessing to empty, so in that case you would be looking for a bad connection or terminal push out in a connector.

I pulled the pump from the tank and I found (1) long spring and (2) tubes sitting on the bottom of the tank. I pulled this pump in 2009 to do the tank modification but I don't remember much about it. Any help where the spring/tubes go?
