I tried a smaller sized strap wrench and couldn't budge it. I got mine off by taking a 12" long piece of flat steel that was 1/2" wide. Actually any kind of long flat edge punch will work.
I set it up against the "ears" of the big nut and lightly tapped. Came instantly loose. There's something about HDPE type plastic that wont budge under torque but will with just the slightest impact force. Dont wack it too hard however. Just a little. Like Happy Gilmore said... "just a little tap, tap tap"
And good luck getting it to thread back on perfectly on the first try. Those big course threads dont like to line up. And even if you get it lined up... it is a little tough to turn. Try a little anti seize to make it easier to turn.
