I have to replace the fuel lift pump on my truck. How much fuel will drain out of the fuel line when I remove it from the fuel pump? And I have read the Procedure in the Haynes manual and it says to remove the starter before removing the pump. Does this need to happen or can I leave it in plae and still change the pump?

No you don't have to remove the starter, that would be huge waist of time. you'll only lose very little fuel, put a drain pan below, but I would estimate less than a pint.

If you have a full tank of fuel you can loose a lot of fuel. The first time I did mine I used vise grips to pinch off the rubber line. I set them just tight enough to stop the fuel but not to tight to hurt the rubber. You can change the fuel pump from the top. I moved the fuel filter which made it easier to get to. If it were me I would get rid of that pump an go with a FASS or Air Dog. After 5 lift pumps I went with a FASS

Changing the LP is not as hard as it looks. Do it from the topside. Loosen your "gas cap" so there is no pressure in the system. You shouldn't lose much fuel at all. Skip the unplugging of the fuel line and just undo the 2 banjo bolts and electrical connector. I've done 2 of 'em and they are not that hard.

Do yourself a favor and move the fuel filter housing out of the way also. Its just two 8mm bolts for more room.
