Unfortunately for me, I can't find a competent repair facility I trust in replacing the fuel line. The 1st mechanic doesn't work on diesels, and doesn't want to. At least I can appreciate his honesty, and I equate that with integrity. As for the dealer, I know they've worked on diesels before. I'm not saying they're good, but I believe they have the resorces to fix the truck right, even if they give the job to "broom boy". If he screws it up, they'll have a competent tech fix the fix. The bottom line is in my situation I have no chioce but letting the dealer fix the truck, and I trust him to fix it correctly. There are other issues I don't trust him on, one of which led me to posting this question in the first place. For example, about 2 yrs. ago I brought my truck to them complaining about loose steering. They told me most of the front end needed replacing at a cost of about $1400. 00. I wanted a few second opinions and got them. The ONLY problem was a worn tracking bar!! Total cost to repair- $200. 00. Now you know why I am reluctant to trust this dealer and why I posted this question. From the info I gathered from the 1st mech. and the members who responded, I now believe there are 5 fuel lines needing replacment, a job I can't do myself. Unfortunately for me I am at the mercy of the dealer. The bright side is this doesn't happen too often.

They know the CTD and have the ability to change the lines and use larger feed return hoses. Might be pricey, but should be less than the dealer.
 
I've thought about them for other things, hearing about them in the magazine. But, they're about 2 1/2 hrs. away (one way ). My service dealer is 10 min. down the road and almost next door to work. With all things considered, and talking on this thread, I'll try the dealer still. I all ready have the appointment set and the parts will be there (hopefully ) when he gets the truck. This dealer has worked on the truck before with some good results. When there was a problem, he took care of it. After setting the appointment and him ordering the parts, I don't want to "pull the rug out" on this appointment, as I'm sure they will see the truck for some sort of service again and I don't want them "remembering" me that way. I want them to remember me in a "good" way. In my opinion trust with a dealership and a customer is a two-way street ( right Bob?).
 
One of the main reasons that I own a Dodge Cummins turbo diesel is the confidence being a TDR member has given me. When you are a member you are also a member of a larger family of friends who want to help. It is frustrating to see a fellow member get hosed,admit that he is going to get hosed, and do nothing about it. When it is time to go to the dealer the members here will suggest it. Now is not one of those times. I was a frequent lurker on this site as I did not know much about diesels and was imtimidated by my lack of knowlege. Now I use the search engine and have only been to the dealer to buy parts. I have saved the cost of the membership many times over in the past year.
 
steel brake lines go fairly regularly on older trucks and those used for plowing/sanding around here, where towns go heavy on the salt. Esp. on the ford I push snow with. 2 have gone this winter-definitely the steel lines and not the hoses- took it to my mechanic and both were fixed at about $40 a pop. Don't know if thats relevant tho since comparing brake lines to fuel lines is probably like apples and oranges. btw I recently found out that dealerships around here charge as hi as 120/hr, whereas my local mecanic charges 35 per and could wrench circles around most dealership guys. my 2 cents.

J Shocik - I respect your decision. Do what you have to do and keep your appointment, especially after they ordered the parts. I agree that trust with a dealership and a customer is a two-way street.



Most of us have had the same experience as CTait. I am sure he would agree that sometimes we just have to grit our teeth and do what we have to do.



I will limit my post on Jannetty Racing Enterprises to say I probably would go to a dealer first. This comment is not baised on my expierance with his service, but on post he has made on the forum.

I REALLY appreciate the responces and the care you all are showing. I have been quoted a price, but I don't want to say what it is for fear of being laughed out of the TDR. The bottom line is I now feel comfortable knowing what has to be done. Some of you don't realise this leaking diesel fuel is now ruining my freshly paved driveway, and when it comes to working on the motor, this dealer is the one who has seen it the most. Lucky for me it hasn't been too often. I just want the truck fixed and hope my driveway is still good. I have visited a former advertiser of the TDR, Blue Chip Diesel Performance, in Hudson, N. H. They did some minor mods so the truck gets out of its own way now. This wasn't cheap, and I thought about them for these repairs, but the quickest way is the dealer, I think.



As for doing the repairs myself, this time of season (winter ) is not the time. I have a little experience in auto repair, enough to know if the job is too much for me, which I believe this one is. I have no equipment for dropping the tank (which has to be done ) or the facilities since it is in the low 20's outside. I have replaced the starter contacts myself, feeling confortable doing it myself because I've replaced my share of starters in the past. It was also Sept. and a lot warmer. Gas tanks for me has been a dealer job.

I'm sure there some diesel repair shops near me that could do this job, but I don't have the time to lok for them. Then I have to worry if they fixed it right. I DO trust the dealer to fix it right, just not cheap! Here's hoping the dealer will be kind to me... .
