Since I have had the cam change I have had 2 tanks of fuel, I'll fill up again tommorrow for the 3rd tank.

First tank - netted 16. 23 mpg with some highway miles (55 to 65mph) From Lawrence to Omaha. The rest was intown. Don't remember what the "computer" said the milage was. This tank had several "lets see what it'll do blasts on it". I need new rear tires soon.

Second tank - netted 16. 10 mpg this was all intown. Normal driving. The "computer" said 19. 2mpg. Majority of the time COMP was off...

Third tank I will know tommorrow. But I went to KC (an 80mph for a while to burn fuel to lose weight), ran 7 times down the strip, drove home. I had a lil over half a tank while racing. On the way back I set cruise on 70mph (which is close to 73mph with tires) and sat back. . other then playing with a mustang once or twice. trip odometer reads 430. 9 miles which with the tires it stands as 448. 14 actual miles. The low fuel light came on about 25 to 30 miles from home. I'll have the actual mpg tommorrow when I go fill up. The "computer" reads 22. 1 mpg right now.

Before this, based on the fuel tickets i could find (I got more somewhere, soon as I remember where I put them "so I wouldn't lsoe them") :D every since I changed to 285's I would average 13 to 15mpg (mainly 14. 5 range), with a few 16 mpg highway trips. only once that I know of did I get 17mpg. I also noticed I have nver put in more then 29 gallons of fuel. I am really anxious to run it on the highway when I get a chance and keep it at 70mph (on the speedo) for 200 miles or so.

Something else I noticed on my way down to KC. If I ran 75mph+ for a length of time, the engine temp would be a needle width or a lil more past 190°, if kept under 75mph it was right on 190° or slightly below it.

My turbo spools decently, however after my visit to the track tonight I have concluded this turbo I have doesn't supply me with the volume of air needed (with the cam and bigger injectors)... hence my EGT's are slightly out of whack when racing. I'm going back to a B1 turbo and reevaluating. The AT-4 turbo might be good for some, but not at this power level (500+). This turbo has been dragged raced, sled pulled, and beat on pretty hard.

Its late I am tired, hopefuly this info will help someone down the road.

Yes. Very happy if the milage stays like this.

It does spool up the turbo faster.

EGT's I think are misleading because of my above turbo observation.

Kat, I have noticed improvements, and it has been since February that I installed the cam.

On good long trips, like when I went to Texas in April, I avg about 20 unloaded. Around Phoenix, normal is averaging 16-17.

Now is the time I've been waiting to evaluate. it's starting to heat up here in Phoenix, 109 today, and this provides for some real testing.

The HX-40 still spools up quick, very little smoke, and the EGT's I can keep under 1500 under full throttle accelaration with the UFM Drag on 5,5. Normal driving, like the speed limit, it stays around 700-800.

Normal cooldowns to 300-350 degress are still relatively quick, considering the heat.

Is it worth it, I believe it is , because it did exactly what I wanted it to do, where I live. It has been used to pull a 18,000 + lb. load back from Texas(1000 miles one way), with the HX-40 and DD3's. I picked up a truck in Show Low, AZ, about 240 miles away up winding mountain roads, and 6000+ ft in altitude, and it performed great.

Again, this is my experience, not a sales pitch.

I'm gonna change turbos first, going back to the B1 only this time will have a slightly smaller housing. Then I'm most likely going to put my DDIII's back in for comparision. Going to have my BD IV's tested to make sure they are all up to par.

Its only Levels IV and V on the COMP that my EGT goes through the roof.

Are they doing the same thing there as what they were doing in Vegas?

Refresh my memory? LOL In Vegas I was too overwhelmed with the whole week. . and the camshaft to really evaluate much other then it was a fun truck to drive again :D

Just some recent things I have noticed have got me pondering if I have a leaky injector. So the Bosch shop around the cornor will test'em for me. Also waiting for them to get their Cummins Insite software :D

What does your truck weigh? I know you told me once.

Hmmm....

Maybe I don't want to pony up $2,500 for that DD cam like I once thought I did... . I just filled up the other day and HAND calculated 18. 17mpg. This was about 50/50 hwy/city, with the Comp continuosly on 2-4 with intermittent freeway blasts on 5-5 to take care of some ricers. What even amazes me more is that we're talking about a truck that weighs over 7,000lbs, is lifted on 35"s, and is cranking out over 400rwp! I'm VERY happy with my 18mpg, so I think my $$ may go elsewhere. ;)

No I still have the 190° thermostat. I'm trying to keep from changing too manythings so I can get some good information with the same variables.

Dezlpwr, don't you think some money spent on egt reduction would be beneficial to your engine? 400 hp with HX35 and 12 housing. Bet you can peg the pyro gauge immediately.

I have found it is easy to get convinced to add fuel because of the power gain. It is easy to ignore egt, the "silent killer. " :D

On another thread, a 12 valver found 400 deg. reduction in egt from the DD cam and a ported head.

I personally don't care about the fuel economy as DTT pays for it. I personally don't care about the cost as DTT is paying for it.

But I can sure tell you that my dad has ****** today as he just had to buy a new motor as the head wasn't salvageable and the rest of the motor didn't look very good because of the high egt's. The cam is going into the new motor, because it's a pretty safe bet that my dad/DTT doesn't want to buy a new motor as reducing the horsepower is definately not an option.

I guess what they say "if you want to play you got to pay" is true, fortunately for me though I have a great job, I play someone else pays. :D But seriously though, the cam would have obviously been a cheaper option than what we are doing now. New motor and we still need a cam. :(

You guys have any openings??

Um apparently you didn't read the whole post? I went from pretty much averaging 14. 5 mpg to the last three tanks being over 16mpg. I've only ran three tanks through it so far. My last tank was 16. 52mpg... that was going to KC (180 miles) driving 75 to 80mph most of the way to intentionally burn fuel. Ran at the race track 8 times. Drove home with the cruise on 70mph (actual 72. 7 with tires).

I figure 4% extra milage with my 285's. With my COMP OFF I have 345hp. Not to mention I have the 4. 10 gear ratio and I am an auto, I weigh in at 6500lbs with 1/4 tank of fuel.

Kat, I must have mis-read your initial post..... (Time to go back to grade school)That cam is sounding pretty good. Driving down to Vegas for the install is the hard part! :D :D

You should count your self lucky to be so close to Vegas. I have twice as far to go... ..... I think it would be cheaper to fly the DD installers to AK to do the job :D

What I am really hoping is that someday they will sell the cam with out the install.....

My understanding is they intend to, however it is gonna be a while while (at least a year?) they get stuff in order to do that.
