Fuel Milage

I know this has been discussed a lot but wanted to post mileage for a 468 mile trip.

I filled the tank at the pump plus a 5 gal container. I then filled the tank from the 5 gal can, right up to the very top of the filler spout. Took 4 more gallons.

Did the same thing after the trip and the mileage was 20. 4 per gallon.



All driven at posted speeds. the trip was the same route going and returning. A small 5,000 foot pass and the rolling hills of south east Washington. Now this was the wife driving and I stayed home. She does not do jack rabbit starts and always gets better mileage than when I drive.

And yes she rubs it in.



It was 55 mph for about 1/4 of the trip and the balance was at 65 mph. So I feel very good about the 20. 4 mpg with the auto.

She used the cruise control when ever she could.



This was her first trip with the truck and she informed me I could drive the car except when I had to haul the horses to go to work. :--)



Big mistake letting her dirve the truck. :{

Your sig shows a 10 1/2 foot cabover camper. Was the camper on for this trip? My truck is an '04 2500 2wd. It always gets substantially better mileage than you are reporting. Those at those same speeds, albeit all flat, I regularly get 23 to 24. 5 mpg. This is figuring manually.

I just filled my tank for the second time, 550 total miles on the odometer. My cummulative MPG is 14. 41. Over half of the 550 miles was city driving. The computer was reading about 12. 4 mpg driving in the city. Sure hope the trend is up.

Truck had no load except the wife and two big dogs. Remember this is a 4 X 4 and could very well have still been winter fuel.



When you check your mileage are you filling up to the same spot in the spout each time or just from when the pump stops.



If I had not put the extra 4 gals in from the can the mileage would have been 24. 5. at the end of the trip. I only did this to see what the mileage would be for this trip, normally do not worry about topping the tank off.

Ray,this milage is great. Lets not forget the 6000. lbs + the motor is caryig alone. My 94 3/4 ton has always got 17-21. I have got between 10 and 22 mpg per galon depending on my use. There will always be those whoe got more MPG. I see them briefly out the passenger window...

dolenburg I NEARLY FAILED MATH IN HIGH SCHOOL IN THE EARLY 50's, THAT IS WHY I GET 10 MPG WITH ONE TANK AND 21 MPG WITH THE NEXT. ) WORKS FOR ME!!!!!!

04. 5 mostly 60 mph country roads. 14. 5 mpg. It only gets worse in other conditions. Very disapointed!

Hey Big Rig,

Its time for you to "hook up" to something heavy! and break it right. Your fuel milage will increase. I notice a a 2-3 milage increace after pullin heavy loads.

I avg 18. 5 mpg, m/t highway (mostly) w/ a heavy right foot (he-he)

I was getting 14 until I had 600 miles, towed a bob cat around for 200 miles, mpg jumped to 18 and has been there ever since.

Yep, I think you are right about putting a load on it. I will be putting a 3100 lb. camper on it next month. Don't have anything heavy to break it in right now. Wished I did. I am hoping that getting off the "Winter Blend" will help the milage also. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Is the Lance the new Aluminum frame or the wood frame.



I have been looking at a different camper, found a new 03 Lance w/slide out for 16,000... May run over and look at this weekend.

I will be putting My Alpenlite on this weekend and haul it for two or three weeks to make the rig work and see if that will help my mileage. Already have 9760 miles on it but very little of that is loaded.



I run 16 to 19 with the 95 cummins 5 speed so if this auto gets even close to that I will be very happy.

It all depends on your right foot. I have gotten 22 pencil and paper checked and I have gotten 9. 8 pencil and paper checked. The 22 was very easy driving at 55-60 and very soft pedel no stopping except at the fueling station. The 9. 8 was 75 mph pulling my big toyhauler loaded to the hilt.

Hey there Ray,



The Lance I ordered is wood framed. The aluminum framed Lance is supposed to come out later this year, I think. A lighter camper might improve the milage by a small amount given the same size camper. They are going to put a basement in the aluminum framed camper. That will raise it up, giving more wind resistance & less mpg. I am happy with what I ordered. If I could have gotten same layout with aluminum frame I would have ordered that, but it is not available.

I hope my mpg doesn't drop too dramatically when I put the camper on. I would like to get at least 15 mpg but I don't know if that number is possible.

70-75 mph with 10-20 mph head winds, I get 16. 2 mpg.



With the Lance camper, I got 12. 5. I think fuel consumption has more to do with wind resistance than weight. My 9,000 lb. 5th wheel trailer gets 11-12 at 70 mph.



I have not driven steady at 55 or 65 MPH yet. Truck turned over 7,000 miles on OD at lunch today.



Part of the 70-75 mph trip empty also saw a small sprint at 106 mph. Total trip was 1550 miles.

Interesting news about aluminum frame on the Lance. Last year at a local RV and Boat show the Lance factory rep swore up and down that Lance would never go to aluminum frame. He would have had to know only 1 year ago that this was in the works... Called aluminum frame designs inferior because the metal would sweat and cause mold. Also called basement models inferior. I guess they will say anything.



I think you enjoy your Lance.



My 94 drops about 5 mpg to about 14mpg with our basement model camper (approx 4,000lbs loaded)



Hopefully mpgs while on vacation isn't too important.



Is there good caming in Kansas? Never been there. One Day.

I have an 04 4dr dually HO 6spd 4. 10 rear and get 20 mpg in the country empty[ easy on the pedal] and 11. 5 mpg loaded at 75 mph on the interstate.

I'll second that.



My last trip pulling an empty flat deck trailer got me 11. Last few fill ups, I've been getting 12 to 13 mpg around town. Average highway is 14. 8 empty with the cruise at 70 mph with only three aboard with an empty bed. My figures are all paper.
