I am just about finnished with this damaged 1996 5 spd 4x4 2500. I went underneath the rear end to check the axle lube. Noticed it has 4. 10 gears. Does the 4. 10 gears return alot worse mileage than the 3. 55 gears?

My 4. 10 geared 4whl. drive 3500 gets 18mpg on its best day running empty.

Based on what others have posted, I'd expect to get a couple more mpg if I had 3. 55s.

Well Chris if you could contain yourself from smoking every other thing that gets behind your truck you'd get better!:-laf j/k

I have my pump retimed and I was getting 18-18. 5 on summer blend @ 2000RPMs and below (70mph) over 2K RPM and it suffered majorly!

I have a 1996 2X4 Auto trans with a 3:55 and the best I have got is 25 MPG and when I pull my trailer 8000 Lbs I get 12MPG and when I had my Lance camper 9 1/2 footer I got between 15 & 17 MPG I,m happy with that. and I have a #8 plate and a K&N air filter And a 16Cm housing. Bob

I get 18-19mpg on the highway driving and my truck is a 2500 with a topper on and 4. 10 gears. Driving at 70 mph @ 2500rpm best to date is 19. 95 mpg worst empty 16. 5. It only did the 16. 5 once I think it was because I used some inj cleaner on that tank full. Went from stock tires 245s to 285s mileage stayed the same and yes I did correct the mileage for the bigger tires.

I had 4. 10 gears in my 2 wheel drive 2500 and got about 18 mpg until I changed to 3. 55 gears, now between 20- 22 mpg empty

Well I don't fell so bad with my fuel mileage after reading everyone else post. I actually thought my truck would be on the lower side of the results seems every one you see with a Dodge gets 20-25 mpg. And I don't doubt that it can be done with these trucks. But for use with the 4. 10 and 4x4 QC its a lot more difficult it seems.

I just made a round trip from Florida to Ohio and back over X-mass, towing an 18' flatbed with auto aboard. Averaged 12-16 MPG, 70 MPH with cruse on exec pt when I punched it out of overdrive climbing hills. Truck is box stock 96 3500 Auto 4x4 CC LB, Purealator paper air filter, 4:10s. I had no better results with K&N. I have NEVER seen 18-20 even empty. IMHO either my speedo is reading incorrectly or there are owners out there telling falsehoods.

PS. Wish I was getting 20, Diesel just went to 1. 70/gal today!

Happy trucking, Dave
