My new 01. 5 ETH/DEE was giving me almost 18 mpg on three tanks of fuel then dropped to just above 16 mpg for the last two tanks. This happened at around 1500 miles.
I've tightened the boost hoses and none seemed loose.
The unit is running great and as you can see by my signature #ad

I am aware of it's capabilities.

Have the same rig as you with the same problem at that milelage. Then I read somewhere on TDR to try a bottle of injector cleaner and then run her hard, or like I heard "Drive it like you just stole it"

I have a y2k 2500 that did the same thing. After the first couple of tanks mileage dropped also. Mileage started to go up slowly after 15k miles and seems to be improving slightly as I rack up more miles. I have 30k on the odo right now and I'm waiting for a few good tanks of summer fuel to test for improvements again. This winter I did do better than last, so I'm hopeful the summer will be better also. I don't tow very often so break in takes a long time. Hang in there!

I was having a long break-in period until I spent $45 to rent a U-Haul Car transporter for a day, parked my daughter's car on it and went for a 400 mile joy-ride.
Came back with a HUGE smile on my face #ad

, fuel milage is now 2mpg better, and the CTD loved it. I know we don't all have a 10k# trailer, so some of us have to improvise.

How's this for improvising?

That's great! Now if we can just pass that from member to member, like the hole saw, we'll ALL have a real short break-in time!! #ad

WOW, look what I started #ad

I did tow about 7500# this past weekend but only about 70 miles. This coming weekend I will make a trip with the same load of about 300 miles. #ad
That should loosen her up a bit.
I really didn't notice the mileage on the 3500 as much as I noticed the increase in power at around 10K miles.

Thanks for all the responses #ad

Rob,

The backhoe is a friends and it is over at his house, the D2 Cat is in my backyard but unless you know how to start it (read pony motor) you're not going to move it. B) Also if you think MikeR's straight pipe is load you have not heard anything until you hear the pony's straight pipe. The diesel's straight pipe is about like Mike's.

Try a diesel fuel conditioner. When I started to use Lubrication Engineers DCI+, I saw about a 1. 5-2. 0 mpg increase. Inaddition, the fuel conditioner provides additional pump lubrication, which is good for the VP44 in the 24 valves. DCI+ when purchased direct from L. E. came out to be about $. 05 per gallon. Also, there has been talk that the ECM gradually lets the motor break in slowly, and opens up fully around 10,000 miles. I have seen gradual mileage increase since I bought it, but sometimes how I drive will drop a tank down 1-1. 5 mpg.
