Fuel mileage ?? for the 555/305 HO..

My 2004 has the 555/305 HO. I am getting about 18. 5 on the highway driving about 63 miles an hour,unloaded. City/highway combined about 15mpg. My mileage is around 12,000 miles. Are these fair numbers for fuel mileage ?? Just curious what other owners are geting for fuel mileage. Thanks for any Info. Coobie PS,I change my fuel filter every 5000 miles and use stanadyne performance formula additive.

I've got 36K miles on mine now and my numbers are almost exactly what you have - actual average is around 15. 6 city unloaded and 18. 5 highway - keeping it juussstt under 2000 rpm (which is below 65 mph with my 4. 10s and the 48RE).

I'm assuming yours is SRW? You're MPGs are at the low end 'normal' - if there really is such a thing. At ~65 MPH highway driving I'd expect a 305 SRW 4x4 w/ 3. 73 gears to get right at 20 MPG. If I hold my speed under 70, I consistently get between 19. 5 and 20. 5. Your MPGs should creep up a bit more as you approach 20k miles. I did experience a drop in MPGs for several weeks early in the spring. I don't know if it was the fuel or what. I fueled up at several places and changed my fuel filter a couple of times but nothing seemed to help. I was stuck at about 17MPG. At the time I had about 15k on the engine. Right at the end of May my MPGs jumped back up to 19-20 and have been there ever since. I can't report on stop and go mileage because I live in the boonies and almost all of my driving is highway. 18. 5 is nothing to feel bad about though.

I've got right at 2500 miles on mine, now. 4 fillups, (1st one by the dealer), 17. 5, 20. 2, 20. 3, 18. 5. Mostly driving back and forth to work, 85 miles each way, about 70/30, highway/city. Mine is a reg cab w/4:10 gears. I try and keep it under 70. It seems to be about 1 mpg better at 65, though, (judging by the computer). I always caclulate by hand. The 2 20+ tanks, I was driving specifically to see what it could get. Your truck sounds about right.

Mines a dually 4x4 - I will be on the low side of "normal".



24000 miles, 17-17. 5 going 75-80 on the highway unloaded. If I drive 65 (which is next to impossible out here in the west) I can see 18-18. 5.



Mixed city and highway I see about 15-15. 5.



Again, this thing is BIG and it pushes a lot of air and has a lot of rolling resistance. I'm happy getting what I get.



All figures are hand calculated. My computer reads about 1 mpg or so higher (for most people, their computer reads low).

I have gotten as high as 22 driving back and forth through the N Parks at 49 mph.

With 16000 miles and +- 2200 towing 7k get 20-22 highway 55-65mph. Since did the vent kit have 800 mile range.

I took a trip up to Omaha a few weeks ago, and I didn't watch the MPH, I watched the RPM's, keeping them just under 2000 RPMs, around 67-69 MPH after calculating for 315s. I got 23. 5 MPG... . I was astounded. I now have 67000 miles, and my EDGE is on Level 4, so this all help quite a bit.

My last tank, with 25k on the ticker, got 20. 5 calculated, with mostly city driving.



I have seen a high of 22-23 in the mountains of KY, running it at 55, mixed short and long runs. Once towing a double stack of hay bales, the big round ones, I calculated 18. 6, and probably weighed around 8k, driving rural backroads. No big hills to pull with it. When I run highway empty at 75, it gets a little over 19.

I have an 2003 SLT 3500 DRW 4X4 with 4:10. Have about 34K miles and getting 17. 5 MPG on highway empty after I installed a retrax cover. I have a 40' travel trailer weighs around 10K that I get 12. 5 MPG.

The worst possible combo is 3. 73 DRW 48re 4x4. However, the two most evil factors I've found are the transmission and 4x4 vs 4x2. The 2wd 6speeds get incredible mileage compared to a 4x4 auto!



Coobie I have the same setup as you - auto 4x4 3. 73 srw. Your mileage is about right. I have to say, now that I've got 26k on my truck, my mileage is FINALLY getting a little better. I honestly thought everyone who said 'wait for more mlies' was bsing when my mileage didn't improve by 15k. Well it seems to be slowly creeping up. Before my combined city/hwy mpg was pretty steady about 15. 7. Now I haven't seen under 16. 5 over the last 4-5 tanks. This past one was 17. 2. Also going 65mph I used to see abotu 18. 2 to 18. 5 if I reset the overhead computer to find out my instant mpg. Now it reads abotu 19. 2-19. 8 at 65, depending on how flat the ground is...



Bottom line, I think you're doing just fine, and it should improve as you get more miles on the truck!

Have 27,000+ now, and it runs a consistant 16. 2 to 16. 5 all around empty. That is city and highway, usually 70+ with some stop and go mixed in. It is about 2 mpg lower than the identical 03 SO under same conditions.

It must be that you have an ST and I have the SLT!

When I had my 315 tires I would get 16 mpg in city and 21 on hwy. . Now I have 295/70/17 and my mpg went back to 19 city and 25-27 hwy. . I only buy premium diesel from shell or truck stops that sell alot of fuel. . I run no additives and have 60000 miles on the truck I drive. If I pull my goose neck I get about 17-19 mpg on average. .

I have nearly 12K on mine now. Mileage never was a real issue. Got 16 on the hwy right out of the box. Now up to 20. 5 @ 67 mph. Hand calc'd. No question about the fact that your mileage may vary. Some are poor and some are great. While I'm lucky in that regard, I have the dreaded vibe @ 70. Almost rather have the bad mileage and no vibe. :-{}

Overhead consistently shows 18. 5 mostly back and forth to work. Haven't hand calculated in a while, but I would bet that I'm closer to 20.
