filled her up on Tuesday when I bought it. Had 350 miles total on odometer. Put in 28 gallons until full. Driven 170 miles since... and fuel gauge is reading half tank. Anything wrong? 170 miles on half tank?

the fuel gage is not an indication of the gallons used

i have the the same truck,7k,16-17 mpg

the same truck 0f 99 vintage same milage,19-20 mpg

seems low to me

I can easily get 300 miles on a half tank in my new 2002, my long wheel base does carry one more gallon than yours but it should not be that big of a difference.

You're still doing way better than my truck. When I got mine, the best I could get when running UNLOADED was 10-11 mpg. Today, at 14k miles, my best unloaded tank has been 16. 5 mpg, running 70-75, with my DD UPM box set to maximum DEFUEL mode on power level 1. That was from Reno to the Bay Area.

Normal around town driving gets me 13-14 mpg at best.

I changed the IAT, which was definitely in need of replacement, based on the measuring I did, but it didn't do squat for my mileage.

I'm convinced there is something seriously wrong with this truck, but I have no way to find out. The dealer, of course, is no help.

So anyway... 12. 5 mpg is what I calculated for you, which is very good for a brand new one. It should get a lot better in the next 10-12k miles too. At least your truck seems to be normal.

Where you at, Dixie Dawg? Come on down to Kathleen and I'll take you to a truck stop and get you some good fuel and see if we can't get you straightened out. I drove from Atlanta to Savannah last night and got 20. 8 running 75. Usually I'm in the 21-22 range running 70. Sounds like you haven't towed anything yet. You need to hook up to something this weekend and take it out for a run. That will help seat the rings, etc. If you don't hook up to a load it will take a little longer to seat everything. Any way you do it, around 5K miles you should start seeing a noticeable improvement in mileage up in the 18-20 mpg range with the HO.

I agree. Put some more miles on it. I got 21. 5 on my last 1000 mile trip running 70-75 on the freeway. I haven't been on a good stretch of road to check it with the injectors in. I have heard it gets better. 30,500 miles on truck.

fuel indicator

Our fuel indicators are not percision devices, they only give an approxamation of fuel remaining and they tend to err very conservatively. i. e. fuel indicator reaDS LESS THAN 1/8 tank and you put in 26 gallons. some people seem to get very upset about this, but if you run it dry you may damage the injector pump, (about $4K to replace), and Dodge does not want to cover it if the problem is you ran out of fuel. same goes for trip computer.

Only way to get accurate readings is manually calculate with miles traveled and gallons to fill, (always fill to the same amount everytime on flat surface). you then can get a good number, after several fillups, and know how far you can go on a tank. I would not cut it to close though, water and other "stuff" tend to collect at the bottom of the tank.

good luck you mileage will get better over time!

fuel mileage

just thought you guys might be intersted in mileage on 98 24v. 2wd. from new in july 98 to july 01 avg. 22. 9 mi per imperial gal. no towing . highway and town. in summer has been as high as 28. 6. you gotta love it.

mileage

Out bird hunting this weekend and it was the first time on the road with my truck since March. High was 20. 2mpg. This was very surprising for me because on the way home I really flogged it for me (conservative driver) 85-90 most of the way. Figured my mileage would be down the tubes but the rpm's were reading only around 2400. To my amazement it never really dropped so just kept it there. If had been a gasser it certainly would have been down the tubes. Love these trucks

01. 5 SLT QC medium bronze auto, sb 3. 54 very well equipped.

with just shy of 23,000 miles I am getting 22. 4 mpg and that is taking it easy at 55-60 (passing as needed). I am tickled pink, but since I did not break her in by hauling loads it may take longer to seat everything... still ain't broke in yet!

I'm hoping, maybe it'll get even a little higher in the future?

Dixie Dawg:

The gauges and overhead console on my truck are totally unreliable. When my fuel gauge reads 1/8 of a tank which should indicate about 3. 5 gallons (imperial) remaining and pump light comes on with a chime, there is actually closer to 10 gallons remaining! The maximum amount of fuel I have ever added is about 21 gallons!

Solo I get 22 - 23 mpg and about 13 - 14 towing a 10,000lb fifth wheel. On a recent 14,000 mile trip we averaged 15. 4 mpg.

Enjoy the ride:p
