Fuel mileage towing with a ford?

Ya I know... This is not a ford forum, but I am sure you guys will have an opinion.



A friend of mine just bought a 2004 Ford f350 4X4 with a 6 liter diesel and then bought a 2006 Jayco Eagle model 323RKS, GVW 12000 pounds and figures to get 13 to 14 mpg. What do you have to say about that?

Both my boys bought 05 6L Fords they pull 12000 to 13000 and they never see 10 mpg and that's at 60 mph or less, high 8's at 70 mph. But those 6L's run good when they run.

10 mpg will be the kind of numbers he should see with what he's pulling.

My father in law has a 350 dually 4x4 with the 6. 0 and averages between 7 and 10 mpg depending on what he is towing. Running empty he will maybe push 14 but that is about the best he does and that is empty. Not sure if he has an aftermarket tank or if it is the standard but he says he has a 45 gallon tank (i think that is what he told me) mine I believe is around 37 or so. He will usually have to stop to fill long before I will if we are traveling somewhere together, even if I am pulling heavier than he is. He'll tell me he is getting close to empty and mine will usually still be over 1/4 left and most of the time close to half way from there to half a tank.

My dad has an 02 so it is the 7. 3, runs good, but I run out long before he does, maybe it has something to do with a heavier left foot . . . . . .

A friend just moved from Colorado to the east coast, 6. 0 PowerStroke, 6spd, crew 4x4.



Towed an 8. 5' width trailer, not sure of weight, but no more than 7K lbs (it was off the bumper, it was likely closer to 5K).



Tanks mpg readings were: 12. 2 (half was empty), 9. 8,10. 2, 10. 8, 9. 5, 10. 5. Entire trip was rain/snow mix, driving 75+, lots of head/sidewind. Boost gauge would go 17psi so there was wind!

I just started doing some towing for a friend. He has a 7. 3 ferd and I have an '04 (305 motor) cummins. We're both stock except for exhausts and intakes.



He says he gets between 10-12 with 8-10K behind him. I've made 2 runs so far with 8K each and got 14. 5 and 15 respectively and I get 21 +- empty on my drives home. Has him scratching his head... I told him what the solution was. :-laf

Not sure what the 6. uh-oh will do... but it won't get what he's figuring.

I occasionally see shiny new Ford Sick. Os riding down the interstates on rollback wreckers. I bet those Fords are getting great fuel mileage.

the overhead mpg is very accurate in these trucks. it read exactly what we averaged there and back.

That one makes me laugh.



I wonder if Ford Marketing types have thought of that. That's the silver lining in their corporate cloud. By factoring in all the Ford Super Duties being towed back to dealerships, probably most of them reimburseable under warranty, they can honestly claim "highest average mile per gallon truck on the market. "

My brother has a 05 shortbed 4ed auto. Towing his 30' camper around 7000 lbs he gets 10mpg if he stays below 65 on the highway. He never bothered to ask me about fords before he brought a used one with 50K on it. , so I don't bother to tell him I get 12 towing my 30% more weight (which is 2' higher) at 65.



The only time I saw 10 in my 02 towing was a 30' terry 5er (billboard front) at 75mph with a CTD that was not broken in yet

My dads 7. 3 gets 12-13 towing and 15-16 unloaded, seems like all the 6. 0s get 10-12 no matter what. I love watching my gauge cruising past 20 average miles to the gallon and then back it up with a calculator when I fill up! Oo.

I Car Pool With A Guy With An 05 Stroke 4 Door. His Truck Gets Avg. 21 Mpg! I Have Seen It. His Is A Auto But Ive Tried To Talk Him Into A "chip"--said He Has Had Enough Problems Already!

My father and I went to Wyoming in November pulling an 8,000 pound enclosed trailer. He has a 2003 7. 3 liter 4x4 crew cab. At 63 mph, we averaged 9 mpg. No kidding. The best we saw was about 10. 5. My old Cummins 4x4 pulling the same trailer gets about 13. 5-15. We will be taking the Dodge next year. Even though the Ford does ride better.

You can tell your friend to do what many Ford owners do. Lie about the mileage. That's what my brother-in-law does to get the great mileage he gets on his Ford pulling a 28' 5er.
