I have a 2002 (6spd) xcab 2500 and I want to boost my fuel mileage if possible. I have a K&N cone filter with 5 inch straight exhaust. I don't think any thing else has been done to it. I recently bought it used. Many Thanks
 
It is simple. . you need the magnetic collet thing which aligns your fuel molecules in the proper orientation. Then get the air vortex thingy that agitates the incoming air charge to help combustion. After that, you need a body kit and a big wing for the rear end. :D
 
In all seriousness, welcome to the club. It seems to me the best thing to do for mileage is to keep the right foot light! Some have claimed adding the 275hp RV injectors helped with mileage, but I cannot confirm that.
 
Actually I added the 45hp bully dog injectors and seem to have gained about 2mpg ... which isn't bad considering the truck weighs 7000lbs. I also run the comp, air intake, 4inch straigh exhaust, and 33" tires... .



did i mention i have a heavy foot? :D
 
The thing about BOMB's is you have to calculate mileage at the pump not go by the computer. After I put in my EZ I thought I picked up 3 MPG, which was not true.



The best advise seems to be keeping your right foot under control. I just read a mag article about improving gas mileage and one of the things in the article was talking about duct taping an egg to the gas pedal to teach folks how to be easy. Personally, I'm smart enough to be able to just envision the egg being down there, or else I'd have egg in the truck.

The aerodynamics of our trucks is such that the power required hold high speeds increases exponentially. It takes nearly twice as much power to go 75 mph as it does to go 45 mph. So drive slow and keep your RPMs low and you'll have excellent MPG... considering the size of the vehicle.



Unfortunately, that's crappy advice because no one likes to drive that way. If you are serious about better mileage, try limiting your top speed to 65 mph for tank full. If you do at least 50% freeway cruising, you'll see a difference.



As for parts, the Edge EZ & RV 275 injectors netted me about 1 MPG increase, cost $550 (used). A toneau cover netted 1 MPG, cost $400 (new). $950 still buys a lot of diesel in this country. Change driving habits - FREE. Properly inflated tires - FREE. You decide how you want to spend your money. Reducing weight and drag helps more than increasing power.



BTW, I bought the box and injectors for performance improvement, pretty good value for that price. I bought the bed cover for cargo protection from weather and prying eyes. The MPG gains are a bonus in my reasoning.



P. S. My average commuting MPG is 20. 11 (50% freeway), best tank, 450 miles, all freeway, top speed 65 mpg - 21. 7 MPG, average towing my 5th wheel (about 16. 9K GCW) ~12 mpg, average lifetime MPG, towing and all - 17. 09.

Speed kills more than mileage, but that's beside the point. No overhead console computer thingy on my 99 so everything is manual calculation. I run a log and enter every gallon & mile everytime. Worst loaded mileage outrunning the big trucks through the hills in Utah, 6. 5 MPG, best unloaded level terraine, no detectable wind influence, 21. 8. Haulin 5er's, combined mileage, 13. 6. But to get this I can't exceed 62 MPH overall average. When everything is working that machine is a thing of beauty, but when it ain't it's a sisty uggler. And things can go to hell in a handbag in less than a mile.

When I first purchased my 98 the mileage was great. On one trip, I averaged 26. 4 miles per gallon at a speed of just 58 miles per hour. Then I took the truck in for a fuel line recall and they placed a modified throttle setting in the computer. I raised hell because it dropped my power and mileage by 15%! It was like talking to a wall. Now I want to get a super chip micro tuner. It saves the old program if I need to take the truck to a dealer and will give me my power back, at least they claim that.



Has anyone tried the Super Chip Maxi Tuner? They claim it can change your shift points on an automatic and give you three power settings to use when you want added power. I hate to blow the cash without hearing from others that have used this system. I still have everything stock except the K&N air cleaner. I am only getting about 21. 5 with my canopy on now. I only owe a very small amount before I take back custody from the bank. I want to put on larger exhaust ad the new power micro tuner once I call it mine.

Well, be aggrivated if you choose that's you're right, doesn't change the facts or my opinion which is my right. Wouldn't the world be a boring place if everybody agreed on everything?

After all this advice I hate to even comment. But... . , I was stuck commuting 100 miles one way to work for almost 2 years. I found one of the biggest fuel wasters was of all things, my tailgate. I had to haul some long lumber from home, was too tired to unload the rest at the end of the day, picked up more lumber the following night. In any case I emptied a tank of fuel with a light load, and the gate down and added 5mpg at highway speeds! I tested this with the gate off running empty, it works! I like the looks of a tailgate, but at highway speeds it's a real drag!!!
