fuel mileage????

Okay guys I just upgraded from a 1994 12v to a 2004 24v, the fuel mileage on this thing sucks, without pulling a trailer I am getting around 10. 4 miles to the gallon, is this normal????? If not what shoould I start checking????

I wouldn't think that is normal. Mine get's around 20-21mpg everyday driving without towing.

Are you measuring at the pump, or mpg gauge?

Check your oil for diesel dilution. Any external fuel leaks? White smoke?

Okay I am a little worried, I am figuring it out both ways and both are pretty close. However I just checked my oil an it seemed to be over full, after further inspection it had kinda of a diesel smell to it. The truck has 18000 on it, no leaks, no white smoke and seems to run fine.

Man you guys are nothing like the 12v section, 161 views and 2 reply's???? I guess I should feel special that I am the only 24v that's had this problem. I thought the purpose in this site was to help out fellow truck owners?????

I have had a 2004 2500 for 49,700 miles. Only problem was one bad injector. I normally get 15-17 back and forth to work through town. Have gotten as high as 20. 5 running 75 mph on I-40 for 400 miles.

Good fuel mileage Is not hard to get but

It depends on how you drive,do you check your mileage with a pencil?Are your tires pump up as they should be. It hard to help you not seeing the truck and being there. There no reason to get poor mileage with a Cummins diesel.

Fire8033 youre not the only one. My 05 is getting 9-10 hand calculated in town with as little go pedal as it takes. Just got it back from the dealer friday and as usual there is nothing wrong with it. (BS) Just turned 11k on it

18k it's not broke in . You may have a injector bleeding by. take it to the dealer. I have 40k on mine and it is finally getting some good mileage.

is it a 04, or 04. 5? (600?). whats the biuld date? have YOU changed the fuel filter or took someone else's word for it? are there any code's? cycle the key on/off three times. if there is codes post them, we'll try to help.

at what speeds are you getting 10. 4? mixed, highway, hot rodding???

we need some input other than "i'm getting bad mileage,,what's wrong???"

You are definately one of the few And the new trucks are not as simple to diagnose as a 12V. The milage you are getting is way off. Is the truck stock? No big lift and big tires, no power adders, cement filled right shoe :-laf Is it a 2004 with a 305/555, CA version, or the 325/600?



I've have/had two '03s with 305/555 engines and even my dually gets double what you report. My QC SB would get low 20's all the time empty. The "600" engines don't get that kind of milage, niether my '05 or '06 did. With the '05 600 I got up into 17-18 mpg empty at 30k miles. My '06 Mega, a 7700lb truck empty, is now getting 16-17 empty at 22k miles. They take some time to get broken in.



Something is wrong, leaking injector sounds likely. Is there a bunch of smoke at cold start? It isn't a 12V and shouldn't have hardly any smoke at cold start, maybe a small puff at first but the exhaust should not be visible. My '05 had a bad injector and the smoke was visible and smelled of raw fuel. This is not right on a HPCR engine, but might be "normal" for the older engines. Get an oil analysis to see if you have fuel dilution. Give up and have a dealer look at it, it should still be under warranty. Good Luck

I agree with others, your mileage is way off. My '05 averaged 20. 8 MPG hand calculated on a recent 2800 mile trip and it only has 9K on it. About 2K highway keeping rpm at 2k or less and 800 back roads and Blue Ridge Parkway. From one of your posts it sounds like you have fuel getting in your oil. I would take a sample and either change it before running it or have it towed to the dealer (provided it is still under warrantee). A few people have posted here about engines being destroyed due to fuel in the oil.

Okay guys I just got back from a friends house that works at a gas company. He ran the oil into work and it is full of diesel. He in turn called a cummins nerd who said to STOP DRIVING THE TRUCK, that one of the injectors are leaking. He said its an easy fix however could be a very costly one if not fixed asap. Just for information for the rest of you he said with the 24v's when mileage goes south and and diesel is in the oil 99% of the time its a leaking injector.

Not normal. My 3500 dually with auto transmission and 4X4 gets 14-15 MPG average city/highway. Ten MPG would be normal pulling my 14,000 lb fifth wheel.

In your original post you said you had just upgraded to the 2004. Have you talked to the guy who sold it to you? How long have you had it? Sounds like you might have been sold someone elses problems... :-{} That sucks!

I would find the person who sold you the truck and ask if there is still a warrenty on this vehicle. He may have had a pressure box on and cracked an injector. Dodge may have said yea right and he decided to sell it off instead of repair it.
