HEy I just recently changed my fuel return line and fuel filter, but my gas mileage has sharply took a turn for the worse 18-19m. p. g to 13-15 m. p. g any ideas? I did notice when i replaced the fuel return line that the lower end below the clamp was loose and easily wiggled around?. I've parked the truck and idled for 5 min then brought the rpms up to 2500 with cardboard underneath... no fuel leak to be found..... I'm thinking overflow valve? it does seem to stumble a bit below 1000 rpms. :eek:h and one other question ... ... i lost my muffler and still haven't placed a downpipe in its place . . i just replaced my filter and happened to look in there today and i find a black semicircle on the bottom could this be my exhaust fumes bleeding into the air intake for the filter? thanks in advance... . andy

20m. p. g all summer in the winter it drops off a bit... everytime i fill up I reset the trip odometer and can normally run about 600miles (if im runnin empty) before I refuel... . seeing as the fuel gauge hasn't worked ever it forces me to keep track of m. p. g at all times:-{} :-{} ;)

Oh CA, you just can't believe anyone can get better mileage than you can you? Keep trying, it is possible. :)

No, I just believe that I have had two of these, and mileage is always a big issue with me. They both got the same mileage. 14. 5 in the winter. Now if I am NICE to it, and only run on the highway at LOW speeds, and it NEVER cools down on that tank, I can get up to 24 mpg. Now who ever runs like that? On every tank? No one just goes to work and back?

Ok, let's say you use your truck like a car: go to work, to your friends house, go to the movies, and the engine is operating below 140 degrees half of the time because it seldom gets above 35 *f, and a tank of fuel (25 gallons) takes about a week to use. Does ANY ONE get better than 15 in these cases? I highly doubt it. I would bet that I could trade trucks with any one and get the same mileage I get now, driving the same way. :)

CAnderson, I get 10-12 and have always gotten 10-12 since I picked up the truck at the dealership on day 1:{

Mileage

I drive 42 miles round trip every work day at 60-70 MPH then goof off allot driving anywere between 350-500 miles a week but very little stop and go driving and get between 19 and 20 MPG no matter how I drive, the few mods that I have done have increased the mileage very slightly but it never went down.

Jim (just my input)

30 mile round trip to work all 2 lane roads 35-65 mph depending on the idiot in front of me. 8 mile round trip to the fire station (sometimes at a high rate of speed at 3 a. m. ) No towing at all

16. 5 through the winter only had the truck about 2 months in the summer got 18 mpg

Mileage has always been a big issue with me also since I joined but have come to the conclusion that not everyone drives in the same environment and has the same habits. Just in this post alone you have 2WD comparing with 4WD. Not even close. Some guys drive 30 miles to the nearest home depot some have 10 within 30 miles, to some the "city" is population of 30,000 to me it is 2,000,000. so we all have different driving environments and I am tired of always thinking there is something wrong with my truck becuse of crappy mileage, but I do agree some posts I have read(not in this thread) guys do over "estimate" their mileage. I feel in a wide open condition 16-18 is good and in the "city" with stop and go and on and off 10-13 is good but hey I have been wrong before and beside if I wanted good mileage I would of bought a Ranger:D Oo.

Yeah I be very sorry for not being able to do simple math, izz only got a 3rd grade edumacation... ... I drive about 75 miles round trip to work 5 days a week and usually 3-4 days a week i'll drive 120-150 miles before i go to work at 1. I drive from my home in the morning to Lake Eries tributaries to fish till 10:30 then back to home and into work. On average 200miles say, so between the time I get home change and get ready to go back to work I assume the engine doesn't cool down much... . I do drive alot of miles consistently. I have a 4:10 rear end and run most of the way at about 70m. p. h r. p. m around 2200... . I didn't ask if you believe my m. p. g but would appreciate any answers to my questions... . thanks in advance... ... Chromehauler

CAnderson, I think you need to find a job that is further away from home. LOL With a gasser your milage would be alot worse driving this way.

I drive 22 miles one way to work the first little is stop and go then it is 45-65 the rest of the way. My worse milage has been 17. 8 MPG and best 20. 8 in the last 10 tanks.

I am suffering a stumble as well... although my mileage hasnt changed like yours. It was suggested that my overflow is bad. Keep me posted on your progress, please!

I am leaning towards the overflow valve... The best price I have found so far is from piers, cummins is at $95 and piers $55 so its gonna be my next repair... well right after the straight pipe... . I think the short pipe is allowing the fumes to be sucked back up into the airfilter which isn't a good idea. . these bad fuel mileage 16 m. p. g isn't so bad since my last fill up at BP at Mantua Corners was 1. 09 a gallon2/1/02:cool: :D CaAnderson your tank is only 25?mines a 95 with a 35gallon i didn't know they were diff size tanks on 2500s

:-{} !!!! :D :D No, my tank is a 35 gallon. But when the gauge says empty, I fill it up, and it usually takes 25 gallons. I don’t think it is a good idea to run it until I think it will take 35 gallons to fill up. LOL!

I start the thing up in the morning, let it idle for 2 or 3 minutes, then go to the gas station for a coke. Then I get on the freeway and go to school, about 12 miles. Then the truck sits for a few hours, and I go to work, about another 6 miles on the freeway. Then the truck sits for 8 or 9 hours, then , after letting it warm up for 5 minutes, 15 miles of freeway back home. I think it is all those short trips that kill the mileage.

:( If I did get 20, it would save me only about 7 bucks a week. Not that big a deal really.

My fuel gauge hasn't worked since day 1 so have always run around 550 miles before I refuel... and when i do, i run the pump at the slowest so i get a full load of fuel. I just adjusted the star wheel all the way to the stop and only get a small puff of black smoke? Not the cloud I was looking for but the truck does seem to have a quicker bottom end:) :)
