what are most of you seeing with your mileage I think mine is a little low I have gone from high teens and low 20s to 12 to 15 is it just because of more miles
I had a 95 long bed automatic 4X4 with 355 rear end and it would do 19 on the interstate unloaded. ... . Sometimes i saw 21 but not often. I remember one time i was out in western Kansas fishing at Cedar bluff Lake and I was alway's in a hurry there but i still got 18 even tho i was fishing some of the time. b Oo.
Mine's a 96 5-sp and I usually get 19-21 on the hwy. When my fuel return line from the injector pump was bad, my mileage went down to about 16-17, and I had a some power loss. After I replaced both lines, mileage and power went back up.
Welcome to the TDR Carhart! My truck gets average mileage. 19 to 21 running lite. 10. 5 to 11. 5 towing 9000#TT. More miles on your truck wouldnt make your milage drop by much. Takes a few years just to break em in... ... . If you go to your user control panel and fill out your signature it helps others spot problems they've had with similar trucks/milage etc etc,... . Start with the simple stuff first. Check your fuel filter, Overflow valve,Fuel lines as mentioned. A fuel pressure gauge is helpfull here. If your getting good pressure to your injector pump ,my next guess would be have your timing checked. Good time to bump it up a few degrees Something is way wrong if your only getting 12 to 15 mpgs. Good luck
Best was 22 mpg unloaded all interstate, average 12. 5 mpg towing 10k 5th wheel over the pass. 13-15 mpg around town, short trips with alot of stop & go. I have tracked every tank of fuel since new and overall mpg is 15+ mpg combing hwy/city/towing. Sure beats 9-10 mpg with my old 96 vortec 454 chev.
On a 330 mile trip unloaded, all highway, averaging 65 mph I got 23mpg. I wasn't cheating either. When I filled up I saw fuel down in the pipe both times. I average 17 (70 % highway 30% city)
I have monitored my mileage since I bought the truck new.
Highway just below 70mph unloaded I would get around 20mpg.
Combined around town and highway unloaded about 17mpg.
Pulling a ~4500 lb. boat on highway 65mph about 15mpg.
Added a camper shell, highway unloaded about 21mpg.
Combined about 19mpg.
With shell and boat on highway about 16mpg.
These trucks are strange when you fill them up with fuel. I can sit there at the station and add between 2. 5 and 3. 5 gallons of fuel after the pump clicks off. Average is right around 3 gallons most of the time. It makes a big difference if you don't fill your tank to the same level consistently. 1 gallon of fuel can throw the mileage way off.
For me the best mileage is acheived at just below 70mph or just about 2k RPM. with no load, no head wind, and no air cond. I try to drive my truck and imagine an egg under the accelerator pedal. Unfortunately since I put the #10 plate in I've been replacing that egg and cleaning the floor on a regular basis.
