Hey guy's this may sound like a ignorant question but my wife bought me the Bully Dog fuel pin for Fathers Day. Now the question is how do you install it ? It came with no kind of instructions, can I look in thge service manual and therebe some sort of instructions there or if someone knows how and doesn't mind posting the info. Thank's for the help.

Joe

First, let me say I envy you for having such an understanding spouse.

NExt, no, there is nothing in the FSM about pump adjustments. They are calibrated at the factory and are supposed to remain stock  :-laf. You can look in the Pastor's sticky atop the Forum and read up on the VE power section.

Basically, you take the top of the AFC housing off, remove the diaphragm (you may have to rotate it to get it to pop out of the housing), and with 2- 10mm wrenches, take the stock pin off the diaphragm, and put the new one on. Then install new pin in the truck with the deeper- cut side (if applicable) facing the front. I've never seen a Bully Dog pin, and didnt know they made them. What does it look like? After seeing the stock pin, you should be able to make a comparison and report back here;)

Daniel

Well one diffrence I see is the pin base is round and I thought when I pulled mine out before it was kinda ovaled and not round. The BD one is a circle . interested to see how much of a difference it will make . Yeah have to give the wife credit she pretty good about my auto and truck addiction.

so this pin is just the one in the AFC housing?

Joe

Well I put the pin in and the truck feels a little better when you lightly step on it,when you full throttle it it moves pretty good now. Seems to be a good difference.

Joe

Sorry probably didn't describe just the right way. On the stock fuel pin you have a kinda of a cone ,well on the BD pin it is solid on one whole side and just has a cutout(only way I know to describe it )for the ramp on one side. I hope I installed it right because I put the cutout side of the pin towards the front of the engine. waiting on confirmation from BD on the install though

Joe

I'd say if it runs better than before, you got it in right. Pull the diaphragm out in a day or two and look at the witness mark, see if it is dead center of the cut-out.

Hmmm... Yeah, Pastor, that DOES sound a lot like a pin from another application. I may do some investigating and see what applilcation it is from, exactly. ;) I may not, either, though.

So when did Bully Dog start selling fuel pins?

I attended the dog days of summer event held at bully dog last year. After making 449hp on their dyno a guy (i believe he is the owner) asked me what I had done to make that much hp. I showed him the Power Pin and told him a little about it. He said that he may be interested in buying a few. A few months later Bully Dog ordered some Power Pins. I haven't heard from them since.

Do you guys think this could possibly be the "other application?"

So you have a 30 horse pump I bet that thing flies. You could go back and use the edit feature to fix that you must have meant 230 hp pump right:D :-laf :-laf

I am not sure if your pump would have one or not.

Just to be clear here fella's... . that is not the pin I was referring to at all. .

The pin I was noting is not similar to the one Mike makes or sells. If that is the competitors pin, then that is pretty disheartening ..... Mike and others of us have put in time and effort to make parts/improvements/options for these older trucks and it seems everything is open for "reproduction" in one form or another...

I wasn't jumping to conclusions, or pointing fingers. I had just heard a few things that seemed kind of fishy recently, and was wondering if the BD pin looked like the one pictured. But in reality its just like a cam plate for a P7100, there are many similar designs by many different manufacturers.

And to stay on subject... Blue Ox1 - It sounds like you instlled it correctally. A little lubricant is a good idea, and checking the guide pin action while everything is apart can also be helpful.

Criggs - Chances are that your 230hp pump doesn't have an aftermarket fuel pin. The stock pin is probably adjusted for maximum fueling possible with the stock parts. The purpose of the redesigned fuel pin is to allow for more overall fueling (more hp and tq), while having good throttle response, and smoke control.

They started selling them just in the last few months because I saw it in their brochure at T. I. M. ,and told the wife that will be the next part ordered. Not to start any kind of feud here but my new pin is identical to the picture for what I can tell .

Joe

Blue Ox1 - Thanks for the response. Did you happen to look on the bottom to see if there were any markings on it? If it was properly cut you should have an additional 23-40hp depending on the previous AFC settings. I'm glad to hear that it is working well for you. :)

ARedetzke - Please PM with any questions that may include price, etc.

When "tampering" with the AFC one should be careful with the boost line. I have seen a some that are pretty rusty, and heard stories about bent/broken/twisted lines if they are pushed too far out of the way.

Mike

Yeah, see CB Parker's thread about breaking the hose when breaking wind in its direction. When fooling with the AFC, I just count on having to buy a new, updated, rubber line from Cummins or making my own fix. JB Weld works only so many times.
