After reading through the PDR for a fuel plate for my dad's 96 automatic I found a #10 plate makes 220/570 while a #10 plate for my 96 Fed (215 pump) with a #10 makes 330/750... Same number plate, why such different numbers???

Also, his truck is stock 96 with magnaflow exhaust, afe stage 1 and good cond stock transmission. What would you recommend, a #8 (230hp/605tq) or #6 (250hp/635tq) plate for extra power and longevity?

Thanks

erik

There is a big difference between those pumps. If you want a nice reliable driver w/out a bunch of smoke go with the plate that is rated for 230hp for your app. Cummins built a 230 kit( abunch of money)virtualy no smoke under any conditions and was certified smog legal. Just aplate won't be quite as clean but is plenty for most people... ... ... ... for a while :-laf

Without getting into a documentary on it! Any pump, any year model. A #10 for EGT control and mid range power, for all out go with a #6. It's all in the way they are setup and yes every pump is different. A 96-98 5 speed (215 pump) is the one to have... ... ... . period!

I like the #6 on both my 95 & 98. Does he tow heavy? I have never slipped the stock transmission in my 95 in OD(221K) but it is no where near as strong as the 98. My 98 was plated at 116K. I had never slipped OD in it stock towing my fiver. With the 6 it would slip in OD above 24# boost on hills. Now at 190k I can slip it with the empty truck in OD. Time for a beefed transmission. I hope Santa can get it down the chimney!

If I had it to do over again I think I would go with a #10 and GSK for towing, but I do love that #6 plate torque.

This Is super good reading and on my 95 It needs

A bit more horsepower. I would like to get It up to 300 or so now that I got the transmission bulletproof. I have been reading and trying to learn what to have done to the engine so the Motor home gets rubber as It shift gears going In to overdrive. :-laf That would be something.

sounds like i need to order a #6 plate :D

I helped a guy install a 215 pump the other day that had been to the stand for a little tweak with a #6 plate and it is just sick how much fuel it puts out. It has a II 64/14, makes 47 psi with the gate wide open and BIG power, I was quite inpresses with it.

I thought I'd stop at 300hp. Past that now, and still want more.

 :-laf

What a slippery slope... ... ... ... ... ... ..... Oo. Oo.

Erik, even a #10 in the 180 pump is a nice upgrade. It is easy to make it burn clean. Nice shot in the arm, and it gives you more power at O/D lock-up as well. The hp numbers on the chart are more of a general guide anyhow. Different plate profiles affect the power curve differently, as to where the power comes on and how much. The #10 is a great towing plate. The ramp on the upper end helps keep the EGTs down and good mid range power.
