Been reading the threads on fuel plates, starwheels, etc. . My truck is box-stock except for a K&N airfilter. I'm curious as to what fuel plate is in the thing from the factory. Not looking to change, but one of the folks wrote that he moved the stock plate forward with good results. Sounds like some adjustments are available with the starwheel also, wherever that is located.

I have a Hanes manual (not the best IMO) but it does not go into the detail on these items. So my questions:

1) What is the stock fuel plate #?

2) Can it be moved forward and by how much?

3) Where is the starwheel located and what does it accomplish?

4) If I adjust the starwheel, which way should I go? Clockwise or CCW?

Also looking at a 4" exhaust system to keep EGT down towing. Each summer, I tow large loads of hay (4 tons) up a very steep hill to our property. Also normal towing of boat, wood trailer, etc. . However, I don't want to increase the noise level, at least not inside the cab.

Truck has about 96K on it with zero problems. I always tow and drive in town with OD off (from previous Ford experience). Just snooping for a little more oomph without sacrificing too much in the way of reliability.

Thanks!

Gauges First!

I wouldn't touch a thing on the engine till you get at the very least an EGT gauge.

A good 4" exhaust system will help a small amount.

I have a Gibson exhaust.

I love the sound

At lower RPM's its as quiet as stock.

At 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm redline it has a very nice exhaust note with a slight crackle to it. mmmmm Gooood. .

You can move the stock plate forward for a small gain.

Keep in mind once you find out how easy it is to make power you will get the bug.

That's a promise! :D

The stock fuel plate has a number, but it's just a part number. It does not relate to the TST Products after market plate numbers.

The first thing to know is the plate is properly called a full load throttle stop. That means that it has no affect except at WOT. Moveing it forward allows more fuel at WOT. The shape of the plate controls maximum fueling depending on RPM. The governor followers moves up the plate as RPM increases. Thus the various shapes available in after market plates.

The star wheel and positition of the AFC controls fueling during the period when boost is too low to move the AFC throttle stop out of the way. What this means is that the star wheel setting is only involved a short period during acellaration.

Moving the plate forward can result in EGT problems in certain conditions like pulling a long steep grade. Anytime you mess with fueling it is a very good idea to get an EGT gauge.

Reliability is not affected unless you drive like a crazy. Continous high EGT can melt a piston.

Thanks for the info! That's what I was looking for. Truck's long paid off and is still in what I would say is excellent condition. Been headed for the guages, just haven't ordered them yet and will get the "full meal deal" of 3 guages on the left pillar, but have to have room for the little "tweeter" speaker. Almost sounds like it's better to leave it alone other than maybe the exhaust.

Please do not forget The Killer Dowell Pin fix. For mopre information ask Joe G.

Joe, DCurrie says you have the scoop on the "killer dowel pin". Can you elaborate on this? I haven't touched it and I've read about it, is it easily fixed or a major job? And where is this delightful little pin?
