2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Fuel Pre-Filter Recommendation Needed

Hi everyone,



I just relocated my Airtex E7153 gearotor type lift pump down to the frame rail just ahead of the fuel tank. The relocation kit included all the necessary components to replace the fuel line from the tank up to the OEM filter canister. It also included a small standard automotive fuel filter to use as a pre-filter between the tank and the lift pump to prevent the possibility of crud from the tank from ever clogging the lift-pump. It looks much like this:

I went ahead and installed it, but now I'm starting to have second thoughts about it because I have two specific concerns:



1. It has a very small capacity... much smaller than the OEM filter... so to be safe I'm going to have to replace it often. The good news is it doesn't seem to be restricting the fuel flow appreciably.



2. Because it's not heated, it could quickly plug from wax if the fuel gets really cold.



Can anyone recommend something better for this application... like maybe a heated pre-filter with something like a 100 micron cleanable or replaceable screen? I'm looking for suggestions on specific brands and model numbers if possible.



Oh... and the fuel line I'm using is 3/8" ID.



In the mean time I'm searching Google but I'm thinking someone here much have already been down this road. No need to reinvent the wheel.

I have one like that before my Walbro. I just changed it yesterday. I change it with the regular fuel filter at 15000 miles. No problem with it... Jeff

A fuel strainer is what I would use. Fleetguard 3/8" strainer is P/N: FF 5079

If the pump is of decent quality and strength I would consider putting something like a P553204 35um f/w sep inline before the pump. It will do a lot better job keeping the pump clean, and a f/w sep before the pump is never a bad idea.

Thank you very much for the recommendation, but overall that filter assembly is a bit large for what I had in mind. I'd like something small which I can fit on the height of the frame rail right next to the Airtex pump.



I've attached a picture of my Airtex pump installed on the frame rail taken with my iPhone.

I will be installing the same pump this week. Where did you get the adapter fitting for the output side of the pump? I know it's supposed to be a banjo fitting.

I hear ya man.

You just have to find some other goodies to add to your order to "justify" the shipping charges. They have lots of great stuff.

Remember that the suction side of the pump should NEVER use a paper element filter. The pre-filters are actually a wire mesh screen. I get mine from NAPA, listed under the tractor section, you know JD & IHC. I never had any trouble with mine, even during winter. I do treat the fuel every fill up.

That depends 100% on what you are doing. For a pre-filter I'll agree, but there are many filters that are paper and designed to be on the suction side of the pump.

When I installed my FASS pump it came with the same small filter. I had the same concerns about plugging but after a little research I found that it is not a paper filter, but rather a metal screen designed to only trap the larger particles. I would suspect that yours is the same in this regard.

That Mercedes filter is 5/16". I'd want a 3/8 filter.

Just Installed on my sons and my trucks BF1212 before the AD100 with Fleetguard W/S and filter to a baldwin in the stock filter to a Cat 1R-0750 to the CP3 if that's not enough filtration then to hell with it. PS and thanks to the guy that came up with the idea of hanging the Cat filter bracket from the bolts on the Brake Master Cyl. It fits like it was made to go there

Fleabay. Bout $100 shipped. Genuine Racor. There are a lot of knockoffs from china floating around out there lately.
It's mounted in the bed along with a valve manifold so I can switch back and forth from the bed 60Gal tank to the factory tank.
I wanted to mount it under the bed, but it was too dam big. :-laf
It's not the best place, but it's accessible.
Replacement filter are $10. 30, 10 and 2 micron.
