Can someone direct me to a website or place ,other than a steelership!!!, to get this part. Ive looked at a bunch of websites but none list the screen replacement. I ve also unsusessfuly tried Napa , AutoZone and Peckerboys.

Ive also tried to navagate the Cummins filter site but got lost several times.

Any Ideas ??

Cummins Power Services is the distibutor in you area. They have shops in Harrisburg, Bristol (near Philly) and Glen Burnie, Md. I agree, the Cummins website sux.

Is that the one under the fuel heater or the one in the tank?

Bob
The part number listed in the first post is for the fuel heater pre-filter. See here:

I just ordered one from www.genosgarage.com for $8. 29.

Here is the link for the part you need:

Here is a related thread with lots of reading if you're intrested:

At Cummins Southern Plains the price is $7. 07. I bought two, with tax & shipping they were $10. 70

They come with new O-rings and a new flimsy metal nut. If the o-ring isn't deformed I suppose you could clean the screen. Hello back.

pre-filter screen

Thanks guys for the responces. I`ll get one from Geno`s since they advertise and support the TDR website. Thanks Dave, didnt know they stocked them, have to read their catalog more carefully !

If all else fails, try a local semi truck shop. If they are a cummins dealer, then they can look up any part you need with the engine serial number.

Glad I could help you. It was not easier to find the part on Genos but if you search "fuel prefilter" you will find it. By the way, If you read that first link I gave you here... .

... . you will see there is an O ring on top that is not supplied with the kit. The PN for the TOP O ring is Fleetguard 3834185-S and you can get it from Cummins. I did not get one and this is my first try at replacing the pre-filter screen. Let me know how you do at replacing yours.

It will probably be 2 weeks before I get my since Geno's ships UPS ground (10 days). If you want yours sooner you must call to get faster shipping.

Good Luck,

Dave

I've tried to get that o-ring from my cummins dealer(cummins south, atlanta) several times and they remain adamant that that part does not exist.

Hmmm :confused: ... ... If you're refering to the PN of the Top O ring then it don't look like I'll ever get that part. Maybe the PN is wrong. :{

I went back and checked Genos catalog and was surprised it wasn't listed. I`m going to return a few things from Christmas back to Cabela`s so maybe I`ll stop at the new Freightliner dealership in Leesport Pa. As far as the o-ring ,I thought it came as a complete kit in one box... ?? Well, all I know is Cummins/Fleetguard site is horrible , cant find a thing, and the other 99 sites I went to only listed the bare necessities.

I going to get the number of Berman Freightliner tomorrow and put an end to this.

It may not be in the catalog but you can find it on their web site. The kit comes with one bottom O ring, a filter/screen and a lock nut but the top O ring does not come in the kit. I guess the top O ring is not available. I'll update this post when I get my kit. With luck I'll have it by the end of this week.

Good luck,

Dave

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Others on here have in fact managed to get that part from their cummins dealers. I just happen to have a lazy parts guy that won't look in the books. I don't think it shows up on their computers. Good luck :)

Dave M-

Your part number is correct, it matches my invoice from my previous truck.

3834185-s----o ring

3845400-s----screen

Jordan

Forget it

Just throw the fuel heater prescreen away. Plumb in an inline filter. It's easier to change and doesn't have o-rings to leak air at. Lots of guys don't bother with them anymore.

Thanks Jordon. Since I got the screen kit I'll try to get the O ring too.

You think the inline filter will work as well as the screen and not provide any restriction? If this prefilter gives me any trouble I'll do it. For now I will uses the kit since I ordered it. Do others have problems with the prefilter leaking thru the O rings causing problems?

Thanks,

Dave

After you try and change it you will wish you got rid of it. Its hard to get at and you tend to get covered in diesel if you are not careful. The inline fuel filter is the same filter used on our tractor w/ a 5. 9l cummins and some w/ 8. 3l and p7100 pumps. The rubber hose going from the fuel heater to the lift pump will sometimes leak air for low hp, poor mpg, smoke and hard starting. Get rid of it all and solve a lot of problems before they start. The fuel heater doesn't do much good anyways just another part to fail. I just look at other heavy equipment and then at the crap that dodge put on these trucks and shake my head sometimes. Do a search and you'll find more guys with a similar opinion.
