I am contemplating the installation of a pre filter/ water separator between the fuel tank and factory installed filter. My concern is with the frame mounted pre filter freezing or jelling up in winter months. Would it be worth while to install a heated filter head? This would be ran off a relay using the signal from the factory installed heater for a trigger signal.

i've had mine in 15 below 0 and no issues. they have filter wraps you can use, or even heated filter head. i've never need either. i buy my fuel at Sams club. no gelling issues... yet....

I guess what I'd really need to know, is if I use the power from the factory installed fuel heater for the pre filter head heater is if it would throw any codes with the added current draw.
 
you could always run it to a relay. so no more draw on the circuit. i think the wiring is already in place for the Mopar extreme duty filter. might look into it. or try and contact ah64id. on here he's the filter guru around most cummins forums.
 
I saw the mopar severe duty filter kit which what I am attempting with this. My only concern is replacement t filter availability and not being able to cross them to a more common filter thread. I found where I can purchase a fleetguard heated filter head with the 1-14 thread for a decent price and may get two with the second one being used for a pre filter on my 2nd gen.
I figured on running the heater through a relay.

We have the Cat dual filter kits on all of our work trucks from dieselfuelfilterkits.com and have never had one issue with gelling in the winter in below zero temperatures. Anti-gelling is a proactive thing......not reactive once it's already to late. It's a very simple diesel owners responsibility in cold temps.
